I was reading here that Caterpillar was the first manufacturer to put a true diesel engine into a "tractor", albeit a tracked tractor. Anyone out there know who first put a diesel engine in a wheeled tractor? I imagine it was on steel wheels but maybe not.

The first diesel powered wheeled tractor tested at Nebraska was a McD WD-40. It had a 4 cyl engine that started on gasoline using a conventional carburetor and magneto and was then switched over to diesel operation. The tractor submitted for testing utilized steel wheels with 32 spade lugs per side, plus 6" wide extension rims with 16 lugs each.

Allis Chalmers was the first manufacturer to bring the diesel engine to life by putting a turbocharger on the D19....

I read in a book a while back that the first Diesel farm tractor was the German built Deutz in the late 1920's.

I don"t know for sure, but I would think it was one of the European semi-diesels, single cylinder, run backwards for reverse, two stroke, burn any fuel as long as it flowed, jobbies.

Red Dave is right, McCormick-Deering WD-40 was the first in the US.

But the question was not US specific. The US is not the whole world even if some think that. They were miles behind the diesel developments early on, and lets face it,it took until 1960ish for JD to go to more than two cylinders.

(Yes, I know Oliver had 6 pots from much earlier)

ok....but question was:"First Diesel in a wheeled tractor" and not:First Diesel in a wheeled tractor built in US". So Europe seemed to be at first with that.

The first Lanz Bulldog wasn´t a real tractor for agwork...it was only a wheeled engine, same like the first Deutz...both around 1921. First Diesel tractor was the Mercedes (Yes, no Joke) OE in 1928

Bernhard: I rather think the Mercedes contraption was a joke. I did read a written assessment of that thing, and have seen photos. Nothing more than a conversation piece.

No, it really did exist...there was a type only for hauling use and one for ag-use. They also had 3 wheeler, with a big driven back wheel. Since the beginning 30´most german tractor brands built tractors with Diesel engines...so the Deutz MTZ, Hanomag AGR 50, MAN.....Yes even europe had diesel tractors, the Renault VY (1934) had a Diesel, Fiat and Cassani (SAME today) also.

I may be mistaken, but I think the International WD-40 was the first wheeled tractor with a diesel in the 1930"s. It was a start on gas, run on diesel system, hand started. The two I"m familiar with both have rubber tires, but I don"t know if they can from the factory that way.

First direct-start diesel on wheels? Not sure, but I think it may have been an Oliver.

I"m sure someone will correct me if I"m wrong.

Dave: You are right about the WD-40. I don't think we can compare those Lantz and the like. Euorpeans did have diesels before the WD-40 but not in tractors.

Many of those direct starts guys are talking about weren't quite as direct as they make it sound. Yes, Deere and Cat had their pup starts, but really that is what WD-40 was as well. The others had to maintain a good tow chain.

Massey Harris introduced the 55 Diesel in 1949 and John Deere the 'R' also in 1949. I think Massey brought out the 44 with a diesel engine just after the war- could be 1946 or '47. Cockshutt also produced a few 30's with a diesel engine which I have heard was around 1948.

The first Oliver with a diesel engine was the Model 80. They were produced from 1940-1947. The 80 used a a 4-cylinder Buda 4DT226 engine that had 226 c.i. These had rubber tires.
