Turn on the key switch and the resistor starts smoking. The inside gets red hot. What ever is poured around the thin wire is cracked, could this be the problem? It is wired like it was some 4 years ago. This is a positive ground. I have spark at the points and it appears to be six volt, have not put a voltage meter on it, but it is not a real hot spark. Could this be in the regulator? If anyone has the wireing diagram please let me know, it would be very helpful, thanks in advance for any information.

This is a 12 volt system with a positive ground.
The tractor has not run for 4-5 years, but did not have this problem at that time. If the coil has a resistor in it, and then there is a external resistor, would that make the external resistor smoke? I do remember replacing the coil before the camshaft went out, and maybe I put on a coil with a internal resistor???? I will check this morning, thank you all for the information.

Have to disagree with Bob. It must be your field control circuit on your generator, as your electics are 6 volt, and it is unlikely to need a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit.
As Bob says though, probably a short along the field feed wire or generator field winding is burned.

RAB,

It sounds like the heating problem begins when he turns on the ignition switch, before the engine is started (actually, it sounds like the engine does NOT run). If this is true, the generator field windings will have no current flowing through them, and cannot have anything to do with making anything smoke!

Now I don"t know whether he knows what he has got. I was thinking it was an early charge system where the field current is controlled from the load switch and would have a feed as soon as the battery voltage was supplied through the switch, with extra exitation current from a reduced resistance controlled as lights switch was operated, ie. no regulator control box.
Trouble is these "sounds like" explanations are a bit short on detail! Perhaps we will find out a bit later, so we all know what was wrong and how it was fixed, ready for the next time

I assume you're talking about the ignition ballast resistor, and the way I understand you, the resistor is getting hot without the engine running. If that is true, the voltage regulator would have nothing to do with it, without the engine running.

Anytime the ignition switch is "ON", and the engine is stopped at a point where the breaker points are CLOSED, the ballast resistor will begin to heat up. If the engine is rotated just enough for the points to open, there should be no current through the ignition system, and the resistor should cool down.

If it remains hot even with the points open, you have a short in the wire to the coil, the coil itself, the wire from the coil to the distributor, the condensor, or the points themselves.
