Need help!
I have a Sears St/12hp Tecumseh. It smokes. The tractor itself is in great codition. I can get the engine rebuilt for around 7oo.oo. Has anyone rebuilt one of these? Is this tractor worth saving? The machine shop said they could get everything but the cam bearings.

i just rebuilt the engine on an st12 someone gave me. the piston, rod, gaskets cost 250.00 . i bored it myself but the crank cost 30.00 to have it ground.. this tractor has a heavy hi lo range trans and you cant get a tractor built that heavy unless you spend a bundle. i did learn the lme carb throttle shaft is the same as the one on the cv 14 kohler engine... lucass

I own a 1974 sears st12 and mine smokes also. If your smoke is black and it miss fires then you need to adjust the neddle (it is on the bottom of the floatbowl, DONT TURN THE NUT). If it is blueish smoke you need to replace the rings on the piston (blue smoke means that you are burning a little oil.) Also mine smokes real bad when i start it up for the first time in the morning, but if you run it for a little while the smoke will go away. Also DO NOT start the engine then put it in full throttle, let it idle for about 5 minutes. Oh and yes it is worth saving. We own a new JD L120 with a 20hp Briggs and my sears will out pull the JD. You cant get a tractor like this anymore. Also the ST-12 is very rare they didnt make very many like they did the SS series.

Hope this helped.
