OT What is correct air pressure?

I am wondering what the amount of air pressure should be in a 20 gal pressure tank on my water system? I have a submersable pump, and an automatic waterer for my cows. It seems to me that the pump is kicking in and out to often. I had a new pressure tank and switch installed in August, but I think the air pressure is to low. Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for all the opinions. I will give the suggestions a try. I do have 28 cows, their calves, and a few head of young stock. Perhaps I need to get a bigger tank. However, they knew I had that many cows, and I suggested a bigger tank, but they said 20 gals. was large enough. It is still under warranty, but I suppose they won't up-size the tank. Anyway, thanks for all the help.

Since you had a new tank installed, I would assume that it was a bladder tank. That seems to be the norm these days. I would not be surprised if this new tank now has a torn bladder, and the pressure has been lost from the bladder. The symptoms you describe are consistent with a torn bladder. Time for a new tank. Probably has a warranty anyway, right? Otherwise, if you do have an open tank, it needs to be recharged with air as described below. Good luck.

How many cows do you have? The pressure tank may not be big enough if you have two many cows or run a sprinkler for a long time. If you have 25 cows or more the pressure tank is not big enough I dont think.

my opinion

I don't know if their still available, or where you'd get one but Dad put a trick on the tank at our old house that automatically did basically what Rustyfarmall was talking about doing. I believe it was simply called a vacuum breaker. When the water got down to a certain level and started to draw a vacuum the valve opened up and let air back into the tank. That way when the pump kicked back on and filled it back up the right amount of air was always there. I believe the first one lasted over 15 years and the second one lasted for another 5 or so til they tied in to city water.

If you have a bladder tank, then fill the tank to 2 psi less air pressure than your pump cut in pressure. This is with your tank drained and a water valve open.
If you have a non bladder tank, then follow the advice the others gave for an open tank.

Turn of the pump, let the pressure out, put in about 28-30# of air, turn pump back on. If you have to keep doing this every month, there's a leak in the system. Good luck.

It's been a few years since I had to deal with a system like you have, but I remember having to add air about 2 or 3 times a year when I had one. I always just killed the power to the pump, opened a faucet somewhere, and then put the entire contents of a 10 gallon air bubble into the pressure tank, or at least as much as would go in before the pressures equalized. I never drained the tank. Everything would then work just as it should for another 4 to 6 months.

M Nut, You can just about eliminate water-logging problems with a bladder type tank. I bought my first one from Sears about 25 years ago and am now on my second one. A little higher initially, but well worth the money. Just my humble opinion. Regards, Cosmo

Sounds like your tank may be water logged. When this would happen to our well pump and tank I would save a clean gallon of water to prime the pump with, then turn the electricity off ,then turn on a faucet to release the pressure. after the pressure was all released,I would drain the tank at one of the connections. This will allow the tank to fill up with air. Re-connect the tank, prime the pump let the tank fill up ,then use the water. You can buy a device that puts a small amount of air into your tank every time your pump turns on. You may have one on your tank now and it is malfunctioning. If so change it and it should solve your problem. They do seem to break quite often. Tom

sounds like pressure tank is waterlogged. better drain pressure tank 1st. then put maybe 20 psi in it then start pump & see what happens
