Whats the best kit to install hydraulics on a farmall a? Is it possible to also retain use of the pto?

I made a set of "L" shaped brackets and mounted them to the bolts under the transmission then turned a Char-Lynn PTO unit crosswise and put a set of reducing sprockers on the belt pulley drive and the pump. Works great has 2 way hydraulics. only thing wrong is the lever is behind the seat and is moved from right to left to operate the valve.

Offhand, I don't know of a "kit", but we used to have a unit that bolted on over the PTO to provide hydraulics. It was self-contained, had pump, reservour and control valve. I think it was made by Charlyn, not sure though. Haven't seen one in years and it did tie-up the PTO.
I've seen nice homemade set-ups that used the belt pulley drive to turn a pump. I've also seen powersteering pumps outboarded on the side of the engine driven by a long fan belt, but they don't have much capacity. You may be able to rig up a way to drive a pump from the pulley on the front of the engine that is used for the hand crank too.

I have seen a picture of a pto mounted unit which used a long extension on the tractor pto shaft, the pump then mounted to this shaft, and there was enough of the extension shaft still sticking out that you could still drive other machines. I don't know who made it or where you might get one.

I have hydraulics on my A by removing the flat belt pulley and putting a v belt pulley in its place and then running a pump from the v belt pulley. That leaves the pto free. The hydraulics can then operate a cylinder to the mower lift so I don't have to lift the cutter bar by hand. Nice for mowing along the road when I want the bar several inches from the ground to keep it out of the rocks. I also use the hydraulics to operate a front mounted blade up and down and with a swivel to either side.
