I was hunting in Iowa this fall and stopped to ask permision to hunt at a farm. The Farmer was working on his I-H combine, replacing a gear box on one of the snap-rolls. I ask him if he could use some help with the tear-down, and when we finished, he ask me if I was intrested in old tractors? I indicated that I was, and he showed me a shop full of mostly early McCormick-Derring tractors. One of particulaar intrest was a WD-40 diesel of either 1932, or 35 year model. This tractor started on gas and switched to diesel, and if I remember correct he said that it ran at about 700 rpm under full power.
I have not been able to find any information on this tractor anywhere. any help or information that anyone could help with would be much appreciated.
The pump on this tractor's fuel system was huge, it alone was almost as large as the moter on my TO-30 Fergeson

WD40's were a 461 cu in full diesel firstwheel tractor . The TD40 crawler was the tracked version.Basically they were made in three versions first vertical then 10 degree then 45 degree angle on the injectors .Most wer the 10 degree. The early ones had a brass carb like the farmall reg for starting later ones had similar to the MD and W9. Early ones were three speed later ones were 4. bore was 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 stroke. A very sturdy and powerful tractor for its day pulling 4 plows plus. No other company had anything even close at the time approx 1935 to 1939. The TD14 crawler has a very similar engine

In the early 50"s we had a WD-6 a standard wheat land model. I believe the MD was the equivalent row corp model of equal horse power. There was also a WD-4 and W-4 (gas)that was about equivalent to hp of model H. At that time the MD was smallest row crop diesel they made. They started with gas and after specifeid time you lifted both levers up and it was running on diesel. It was trouble free the years we had it. We used Shell fuel, but some people had trouble with injector pump because so oil companies didn"t made a heavy enough fuel to keep pump from destroying it self. We did switch from another major brand when we bought it. Getting it started on gas in Mn winter sometimes was tricky. We didn"t have much use for it then as we had a model H and or C for chores.

I had a day to kill in Assinaboia (sp) Saskatchewan a few years ago- I figured the local insurance agent would know as much about the lay of the land as anyone, so asked him if he knew of any old tractor collectors that might tolerate a drop in visitor. He sent me to two- one had about 4 quonset buildings full of every kind of old tractor imaginable (his dad had started rounding them up in the 40's), and another old boy who had about 25 or 30 IH WD-40's. He still farmed with some of them, but most were in sheds, some intact, some parts. That's all he collected- gave me such a good sales pitch that I offered to buy one, but he wasn't selling. He also had every car he ever owned, lined up on a hillside. Some getting old enough to be interesting. He was a very "colorful" fellow.

They were the first wheeled diesel farm tractors. The governor allowed it to run about 7 - 800 revolutions on gas, then switched it over to diesel automatically. Sometimes it took off on diesel, sometimes you started over.

I know two guys who have them, but they are not very common. I've helped start them, it's a lot of work if they aren't set-up just right.

A real collectors item in my opinion.

Guy Fay probably has a page or two about them in his "IH Tractor Data Book", but I don't know of a specific book about just WD-40's. Maybe somebody else knows a better source of info.
