I have a line on an IH 300. What I need to know is the width of this style of tractor.(i.e. the minimum width of trailer needed for transport).,Thanks.

In addition to what Hugh said, they have sliding axles on the row crop (biger one) as well as dished wheels and 2 different rim ridges to bolt to. How much are you willing to go through to set it as narrow as possible for the ride? Second to worst case, it's set with the dishes & rims as wide as possible, you need to support rear end & swap wheels. Worst case, they are set differently from each other (this is common, mine is set with the right side rim narrow for baling/ combining, left side is set wide rim for stablity). You may end up taking the rims and axle clamps apart to move everything 'in'. I believe the wide front end would actually be wider than the rear wheels if you ran the rears dished 'in' so that probably isn't a real world option, tho something you could do for temporary....

Just so you know what you are getting into if you are just given a number for the narrowest setting for a 300 row-crop, it might be more involved than you think...

paul: Just to add to what you have said, if Farmall, standard axles will be 84" end to end, long axles will be 100". If tractor is a Utility, I don't have the exact measurment but would expect it is just under 70". Axle carriers on both are the same width, end to end.

And very brittle axles, if they are original, I might add. :) Dad snapped both of them, once cultivating, once harrowing. Must be quite a ride. Neighbor snapped one in road gear on the tar road with a mounted picker - that had to be a heck of a ride!

paul: I had a Farmall 300 axle twist about 1/5 turn, and not break. Wheel was dished in and out on end of axle. I ran the tractor for about 6 months that way and replaced axle. I then dished wheels out. Dealer was suposed to do that before delivery. Dad had said he wanted 72" centers and with double bead rims you could achive that with wheels dished in.

I broke two axles on a 100 hp Deere, with ROPS cab, but even with that it was a rough ride both times. It was a forestry skidder articulated, same rear ends as 4020 but with a flange axle. Rear axles on those took a beating as logging arch would pickup 5 ton.

The IH 300, is it a Farmall or Utility, there will be a difference.
