Hi Willy,

Looking good! I'm always hesistant to comment on this type of device as I have been on the commerical built end (cranes) when all has failed and you just won't believe all that happens when the twisted broken metal stops moving.

A nice personal addition might be a couple 1" pipe stiff arms for a load stiffener while moving. Attach one end of the pipe to the lower side support brace bolt and the other end of the pipe with chain crab hooks. A plate with a pin hole on the boom support would hold the arms when not in use.

After the load is lifted then the 1" pipe arm would swing down on either side of the load bottom then a chain (or load strap) would be attached around the load to the stiff arms chain hooks thus the bottom of the load would not swing as it's being moved.

Good Idea! I have used chains to stop some of the swinging befor but it did not stop it from swinging forward. A couple of stiff legs would work much better. I worked 12 hours in a small bucket 185 ft off the ground on the speed ball. It was a Sunnin Crane and it moved around a lot when the wind blew. I thought it was going to tip once when it was allmost straite up and a big gust came by! OSHA would not let you do it that way now this was in the 1970s putting lights on a Tall Smoke Stack. Hey Mark, keep those pictures coming. I enjoy seeing the projects folks are working on. My favorite was your Power Wagon. Wish I had the skill to turn out such beautiful work. Frank M.

Very nicely done Mark. I certainly like those lateral supports much better than the chains. Didn't realize that you had doubled the top link but that is better than cross drilling the boom 2/3 of the way up. Well done.

Thanks it is realy not that big of a project but harder than un-screwing a stuck oil drain plug! Things drawn on paper are easier then building them. I like seeing others projects they make too it gives us all ideas. After building one I got to thinking why not build it better. The cheap simple store bought booms they sell are junk if you want to move or lift something heavy. When I look at them I see all kinds of ways they can bend, collasp and if abused could hurt you but nothing is said about them? What is wrong with a better mouse trap anyways. No mater what you build it can be broke used wrong and there no way to get around it. Mark H.

The boom pole and two lateral supports could be replaced by a single inverted 'V' shaped structure which could be attached at the same locations as the existing lateral support lower ends. The existing center boom lower end attachment could be eliminated and allow any material picked up on the forks to slide all the way back to the vertical member of the three point inverted 'T' weldment. There would not be any binding from the present misaligned axis lower pin arrangement. The entire boom assembly would be attached at three loactions to the vertical inverted 'T', one attachment at the top and two outboard attachements at the bottom.

To bad the bottom support pin for the boom is not on the same axis as the lower end pins on the lateral supports.

I am going to make one that uses 2 lighter booms to form a A-Frame and one top support out of box steel. That way it forms 3 triangles for the strength still breaks down to 3 sections for storage. It will be for tractors like the 8Ns ect to use. Mark H.

Hey Mark, What's with the hitch ball up by the top link? Is that somehow interchangeable to the receiver? It looks like a very good design and you really put some thought into it. That one unit looks like it does alot of different things.

That ball is 2 5/16" for goose neck trailer which needs them high. The lower receiver uses a 2" or smaller ball for regular trailers pulling. The goose neck one is realy set up to move or park one easy that may be in the way. Not sure I would want to haul a load around with a trator off the top hitch other than parking or moveing it around a little. Mark H.

Fine looking boom!! Bush Hog made one years ago, my Dad still uses it, strong as an ox, kind of heavy to load. We've used it to install engines and pulled two fat bulls out of a sinkhole. I can email you a pic if you wish, it sounds like the one Vern-MI is talking about.
