Hello, I just bought a 1951 8N Ford with a 3 point grader blade on the back for clearing my drive in the winter. When I first got it the lift was a little jerky going up but would stay up well even with the engine off. Now it is still jerky going up but will quickly drift down as soon as the clutch is depressed- it will be on the ground within 5-10 seconds. I have been told it could be the piston rings and also could be the safty valve. Which would be a better guess or is there a way of testing without a lot of special equipment.

I would bet its the safety valve. It probably got stuck from sitting. Its pretty easy to replace, or just clean it up and it will probably work for another 10 years(thats what I did)
