I currently have a '98 Dodge Ram 2500 gas 2WD and am looking to upgrade to a dually diesel. I can't afford new so I'm shopping used. Today I found a '96 Dodge Ram 3500 dually ext cab 4x4 with 50K on the odometer. It seems really tight and well maintained. I wondered if anyone knows of any specific problem areas with the '96 Dodge? This one has an automatic trans and is priced at $14,500.

The only complaint I've ever had about them is the automatic transmissions. They just have always had a bad reputation for a good reason, they're weak. Mine are Cummins, and at 25K to the dealer for a rebuild after losing 2-5 after reletively light duty. I know of a firm that has 8 gassers, and when my '01 went, I asked them about theirs, and as I recall 1/2 of theirs had the same problem.

But then again, I know a guy that has a two wheel drive cummins dually, and after his went, he went after market, and beats it into the ground like running a dragstrip (with trailers), no problem. Ran into a guy a month or so ago while fueling mine on the interstate, and his was an '03 or '04 3rd generation Cummins, automatic, dually, 4x4, and he says 100K on it pulling trailers from NY to CA, no problems.

As for paying $14K for yours, some will say too much. I say if is in good shape, go for it. Probably has a 10 year/100K drivetrain warranty still? My '01 still is covered, '96 has 200K and drive it daily. One tranny problem each, fixed, ok after, so far.

Mark.

The gas powered 1996 trucks do not have the torque of the Cummins diesel and are not as hard on the AT. The only problem is allowing the AT to "Hunt" for the proper gear when towing a heavy load. This creates tremendous heat very quickly, and of course destroys the AT. Dodge recommends locking out OD when towing at 55mph or below to reduce this risk of frying your AT. If the truck gets a slight shudder when accelerating with a load, the torque convertor is slipping and if allowed to continue will ruin everything with metal shavings from the convertor. The solution is a HD convertor and valve body, which eliminates AT problems assuming you don't overheat it. To learn all about this go to: dieseltruckresourse.com
