Boy bought the steel for the Boom yesterday and it was around $80.00 I have it fabercated in the shop and all clamped together hope to have most of it welded today. It sure looks neat like a high tech crane instead a low tech boom. Sure would have been easy to just use a heavy peice of Pipe for it instead of Box Steel. Trying to stay light but still strong makes for a lot of gussets and plates. Bet I will have $250.00 into materials alone and 8 hours labor when done but it will look nice. Allready went thru a 4 inch ginder disk making the gussets. But I was able to make it in a way it can go in a 6 inch square box for shipping by UPS not freight truck! UPS has a 9 ft rule but it can't be to wide either. Mark H.

If you go into "production" your purchase quantity
will increase. This should get you some price breaks.
Also, shop around for a supplier. I used to work
as a one man machine shop and it took some time to
find a good source for material. Found a guy that
ran a supply house out of an office. He bought at
large quantity prices and passed the savings on.
The big steel companies don't want to mess with
small accounts. This guy forwarded my order to the
big boys and had it shipped to his company at my
address and he got billed and in turn billed me.
Ask around and you can save a bundle.

I hauled 1200 pound of old rusty steel to the scrap metal man a few months ago. The Chinese paid me a whooping $28 for it. For my hours of work and 100 miles round trip, I got a big mac and my place looks better.

Yes sir, the price of steel is sure high.

Acording to UPS I can ship a Box 99 inch Long X 6 inch Wide X 3 inch Tall weighing 40 lbs from Washington State to New York for $43.98 total. There combined total is 108 inches for the box size. I better measure it close now! Mark H.

Mark,
You are well inside their 9 ft rule with a 6in square box! Or is it 6inches x 6inches x 9feet? Have a nice day, RAB

Mark, That 9ft rule is for length and girth combined, so be care how long you make it, like a box 4" square can only be 92" long or will get kicked back to you. You might also check with UPS on prices, anything at the 108" limit is considered an oversized package and can get kinda pricey to send.

I can get it to 2 1/2 inches thick and about 4 1/2 inches wide right at 8 ft 6 inches long. I better figure that out again it comes to about 122 inches total dimenions. I better call UPS befor I weld the bottom on the gussets. Mark H.

If it is just an assembly with no loose or hangine parts, etc. ups will take it without being boxed, just requires a tag.

I was thinking of wraping it in shrink wrap to protect the finish. Good idea! Mark H.
