Okay, so I know that this question doesn"t serve a lot of purpose, but I thought it would be kind of fun. What I"m wondering is, what"s the best part of restoring antique tractors for you? Is it the driving and using of them? Fixing them up? Hearing that first pop after so many years of silence? Looking at a restored tractor and being able to say, "I did that"? Finding that rusted hulk in the field and seeing all the possibilities it holds?

I"m a bit of a newbie at this, just got my first tractor into the garage and am tearing it down right now, so I guess I can"t really answer my own question, but I"m just wondering what all of you think.

I know that for some, the answer will be a very definite "YES", but if you have something more specific, I"d like to hear that, too.

for me it"s the challenge. sort of like what Sloroll said. pulling that rusted hulk into the garage and driving it out a few months (or years) later, there"s nothing like it. there"s a challenge of finding that perfect machine to restore. the challenge of getting it home. the challenge of finding out what is wrong, what it will take to fix it, the search for parts. the list is endless. plus you get to meet people from all walks of life and all over the country (i guess world) doing it. i guess these things are really what makes any hobby interesting, it just happens i like old mechanical things.

It's the thrill of the hunt! in reply to Nathan in MN, 11-16-2004 18:19:39
I like pulling something out of a grove that the rest of the world gave up on. When those pistons pop free I know I did something. Then hunting for parts. I justify going to swap meets, flea markets, Sniffing along old creek beds and timber. I like the old stuff 20s and early thirties the best. Lots of stuff hangen out in the open and flying about. That and yeslike Van says the Chicks really dig it : ?)

The best part to me is the look on the faces of my neighbors and the kid as I drive it out the driveway for the first time! The worst part is having it run out of gas half way down the street!!
It happens! Shaggy

Howdy,

For me personally, it has to be painting. I love to do the bodywork on these old tractors and love to see the mechanics come together but man, when I start shooting the paint to that old dull gray machine and see the newness come rushing back to it I just get really excited. I stop periodically to look at it and come back to the shop to look again. Heck, I even look through the windows when I'm not planning on goin into the shop. It is just neat to see the change. I'm workin on a JD M that was a barn resident that took too many shots to the head from old tier poles. Bodywork nightmare but she's not anymore. If I can just get a set of rear rims for her she'll be all set but that still hasn't happened. Unfortunately I'm happier to spend the owner's money on a new set than he is so we'll just have to wait for that first test drive. God bless.

I agree. Painting them is the best part. I too can"t help but peek at the old tractor again and again after the new paint is on. I highly recommend before and after pictures. Nothing more rewarding than being able to look back and say that this beautiful machine used to look like that.

The BEST part of restoring ANY old equipment is interest shown in it by a young person who may become it's guardian years from now, after I'm gone!

There's nothing like the look in a kid's eye who connects with an old piece of equipment, and shows an interest in the machine and the era from which it came, and the human heritage from that bye-gone era!

As a teenager I spent time on this old iron working in the fields, and thought they were neat old tractors then. I didnt think much about it for 20+ years, and when my 10 year old son and I needed a project to do together, I thought of them old tractors. For him and I it is the time spent together, finding these old diamonds in the rough, the trips going to get them, the getting them to run, sandblasting and painting, and the joy of watching him go out across the yard on one of these old tractors, just like Allan Jackson's song...."Drive" Charlie2pop
