Hi HRN,

I have a 02 PSD, 6spd, 3:73 and I "don't" use the turbo to pull my loads as I pull my maximum torque rpm or 1600rpm. Well I may use a small amount of turbo boost but not very much. At 2000rpm you can hear and feel the turbo.

I do 28k GVW each week without any problems. I pull 16k GCW thru the Colorado Rockies and very seldom have to go below 5th gear but at 42mph.

Using this method I average 14mpg with the 16k GCW thru the Colorado Rockies, and 16.5mpg here in the AZ mountains.

I pull for best fuel mileage, not time.

Several years ago, I was driving a U-Haul truck from Denver, CO to So. MN. Rear axle broke south of Sioux City, IA. Tow company that picked me up was driving an F350 PowerStroke. We got to talking about trucks as he towed me into Sioux City. Guy said, ya we"ve got Chev/GMC diesels (DuraMax), Dodge Cummins, but none of them come even come close to this Ford 7.3 PowerStroke.
Just one more testimonial.

I have a 91 250 with the same motor. Great truck, nothing fancy, no speed records, just reliable, for me anyway. I use it as a work truck. I put cubes of block, brick, whatever in it and it handles just fine. I pull (not all at the same time, thatd be crazy) an IH 484, Kubota L2900, and a Case 60xt skid loader with attachments. I haven't had any problems. Sometimes it struggles up hills, but getting a good running start works fine. Compared with a new 250 extended cab long bed, my 91 steers like a battleship.

I have a 1993 F350 7.3 with 4.10 ratio, non turbo. it has over 250,000 and has pulled way more than it should have. never had any problems pulling.

I drove a company owned 1988 F250 extended cab with a manual 5 speed and a 7.3 non turbo.
You have to understand that I am a Chevy man, but that 88 Ford was a great truck. It would get over 20 MPG on a trip and the performance was not bad at all for a diesel. It wouldn"t beat a similar truck with a 460 or 454, but then you didn"t need to own an oil well to keep it in fuel either. As far as towing, I towed a 32 foot job trailer between Guthrie and Dickens Texas. That was a bit much for the old girl. But the job trailer was not at all streamlined. It was 8" wide and 12" high. Talk about wind resistance!! If you live in flat country, then I don"t think that you would go wrong. But if you are thinking of hauling more than 6/8000 lbs. with it, or in hilly terrain, I would think seriously about a 2 ton or bigger rig. Make SURE that your trailer brakes work on WHATEVER you haul. Even a small tractor can push you right through an intersection if you don"t have trailer brakes. I have seen quite a few wrecks where either the trailer didn"t have any brakes, or they weren"t hooked up. Johnny Law & your insurance company take a dim view of inadequate brakes.
The 88 F250 that I had was a great driving truck. With the long wheelbase because of the extended cab and the 8 foot bed, it rode exceptionally well for a 3/4 ton truck.

Good Luck,

Britt

HRN;
I had a '93 F250 with the indirect turbo 7.3 and it worked good. Put 285k on it with a starter and a set of glow plugs. I still see it going quite often, must have a pile of miles on it now. I towed tractors, travel trailers and horses with it with no trouble. I never noticed a whole lot of difference between it and my 89 non turbo 7.3 performance wise. You won't break any speed records but you should be good to the 15k range.

i don"t own it but use & work on a turbo of the same truck, Great truck!! Have a neighbor that has the non turbo, like you are asking about says it is the most gutless truck he ever owned. Says to haul his tool box is about all it can pull!! i do like the power of the turbo unit. when it comes to working on these units That 7.3 really fills up the engine compartment. Not much room to work. FWIW
