Sorry to change the subject. I have a 2002 chevy with the 6.0 engine and the 4L80e trans and every once in a while it puke a little trans fluid out the vent tube. The last time it did it was after just driving around. The trans temp was barely over 120 degrees. I shut it off and came back out later and there was some oil on the ground under the truck. It wasn't over full to begin with either. Thanks again Shaggy

The warranty is 3yrs or 36,000. The guy I am dealing with has a good point though! If they fix it the will replace the valve body with one that will or could have the same problem and not even look at the torque converter to see if its hurt at all. This might sound crazy but I would rather spend a little money to get it fixed right this time than take it back to GM several time's and have to wait a week at a crack.

Mornin' Shaggy,

Been thinkin' 'bout your truck. Seems to me like it should still have the original warranty in effect, shouldn't it?

2002 @ 40K miles? I think it is worth running the numbers, anyway.

Allan

Well I talked to a guy here in town that is about the best around on transmissions. The good news is he know what the problems is! The BAD news is that I have to pull the trans and take it to him so he can replace a valve in the valve body that controls the lockup converter clutch. And to be safe the conveter and pump bushing too. He said it should be around $600. Thats a unwanted bit in the BUTT! Thanks for your help Allan in NE it is appreciated!! Shaggy.

You said it only does it every once in a while so it could be dirt in the oil preventing the drainback valve from closing completely. A check would be to see what the oil level is after parking overnight and if the converter drained half of it's 8 quarts of oil back into the transmission it should show an excessively high oil level in the transmission. Normally the trans has about 4 quarts of oil while the converter holds about 8 quarts for a total of approximately 12 quarts.

How long has it been since you have changed out all 12 quarts of oil? I don't recommend the oil flush processes but rather remove the trans pan and converter drain plug if there is one to drain the 12 quarts. Also replace the filter / strainer as well.

I changed the fluid and filter about 5000 miles ago. It goes in monday to get the computer end checked and I will probably take the trans out next sunday night and he said I should have it back by Thursday at the latest.

That's great. Sounds like he thinks the converter is draining back past those bushings too.

Glad ya got 'er figured out.

He said that it might not be draining back at the moment but it could later on so lets take care of it all at once. Its a bummer the truck only has 39,560 on it. Thanks Shaggy

Hi Shaggy,

Are you real sure it is leaking out of the vent tube and not just another seal somewhere?

That vent is located at the very uppermost part of the case, is in behind a splash baffle and I just cannot image it just "leaking" if the guy is not overheating.

If the oil is in fact coming from the vent tube, me thinks we have a pump problem going on in there.

The vent tube has a short rubber hose on it and it looks like fluid has dripped out of it. Oh this only happens after its been shut off. I had a guy tell me its just getting air in it some how? Never heard of that.

Boy!,

I'm really havin' a hard time gettin' my ol' pee brain around this problem. :>)

You might try pullin' the dipstick out of 'er, drive around and get it up to temp and see if the old gal pukes out of the fill tube.

I just don't see how that vent tube could be leaking oil unless the case is being pressured up in some strange way or else we have a converter drain-back thing going on, in which case it should exhibit a no-move condition for a minute or two at cold start.

You didn't mention a "tranny light", so I'm assuming the transmission works okay?

It almost sounds as if the two halves of the pump are loose, but one would think that this would drop the line pressure.

One more time: are you ABSOLUTELY SURE it is leaking from the vent tube?

Allan

The only thing that is wet under the truck is the vent tube. Other than that the truck runs great! You can fire it up and drop in right off and away you go! It shifts great too! I'll do some more checking and get back to you.
Thanks Shaggy
