Todays tip of the day recommends a needle scaler to remove gunk and old paint. Question is what is what is a needle scaler and where do I get one?

Anybody that spent any time in the Navy knows what a needle scaler is, it's the best thing in the world to remove multiple layers of paint and rust. All of the previous posts have been right on the money about what they are and how they work. I'll tell you a secret....if you want to make alot of noise and make your wife think your really working and doing alot get you a rubber band and tie the trigger on and another to hold it in your hand. Put it against something solid and snooze away. Believe it or not I've seen it done many times...

While you are out getting one, get a good pair of ear defenders to go with it. Are they noisy or are they NOISY?

Got one at Harbor Freight for around $14 that screwed onto my existing air chisel. Worked wonders on a very rusty set of Farmall Cub wheels and rims. Started out trying to sand blast, but it just didn't remove the scale. One thing though is it takes a lot of air. Used a 5HP compressor and it ran nearly continuously.

The needle scaler is basically an air chisel except in place of the chisel it uses a bundle of hard wires (needles). I bought one a little over a year ago, used it on the rear wheels and weights on the M I have. There was about 17 or 18 layers of paint on this thing, I am not exaggerating, and conventional methods of removing the paint just plain didn't work. That needle scaler made real short work out of it. I bought mine from Northern tools. You can also get one from Harbor Freight. I have also seen just the attacment for sale, if you already own an air chisel.

The link has some info, do a search "needle scaler". I have the "F" model. Paint & scale doesn't stand a chance. Very, very, very noisey.

Do they make a version that will work on wood?

They make an attachment that you can put on a drill (well they used to anyway). It looks simular to a wire wheel except that the needles are in four groups. Don't know what kind of application you have planned for it, but it will make short order of that scaled and dried up paint on the wood of a house or barn that needs to be repainted.

On houses and barns I use the pressure washer with the turbo nozzle. It eats all the loose paint off right now!

I don't know, got my curiousity up though. May have to experiment by turning the air pressure way down. I am pretty sure that it would tear up the wood otherwise.

Used a scaler a lot on my last restoration but did not have the courage to use it on the sheet metal.

I think you are wise to not use it on sheet metal.
