Could someone advise me on the value of a 1970 year 4 cylinder diesal leyland tractor.

I have found one with a 5 foot mower for $ 3,500.00, is that a fair price.

Thank You.

what size Leyland are you looking at? mostly they are bringing what other more common makes are but if you have leads for parts and like to tinker they can be a good bargain. My dad bought a 70 horse Leyland with only about 2700 hours for less than $2000 because it had a noise in low range. He just drives it as a 5 speed tractor and it serves him well.

Now understand that this is coming from a fan of
Triumph and MG motor-cars. These were Leylands products, grouped together by c. 1970. My first
car was a 1969 MGB, lovingly restored by my own
hands...and fixed every Wednesday, it seemed. I
baby-sat another BL product, a Jaguar E-type 4.2
drophead coupe (convertable) and maintained it
for some years.

However, for something that I actually wanted to
work properly, with minimal maintenance, and not
to do annoying things like break down in the middle of a field

I WOULD NOT BUY A 1970 BRITISH LEYLAND PRODUCT FOR FREE!!!!

In 1970, Coventry and Birmingham were beset by
labor (labour) problems together with financial
difficulties. This caused workmanship that was
below dismal...

If you're prepared to re-assemble, re-fit, and
essentially re-do the construction of this bit
of vintage British machinery, then more power to
you.

If not...well, John Deere and International and
Ford built great machines during the same years.

Thanks gwb:
I was concern as it was suppose to only have 500 hours on it, and 30 + years old.

Thanks, I think I will look for something else.

Doug

Count me in on the restoration of fine Brittish Leyland (for Fun). To rely on a lucas electrical system is asking for heart break. Construction quality and fit varries wildly between machines. When "just right" your heart will stand still. Performance plus! the rest is just mean spirited wallet beater. I loved my MGs and have lots of time under a Jag but wouldn't want to bet the farm on one.

Ha! I like that. "Under a Jag." As the Scions of
Lucas (AKA "SOL") Club says: "Electrics by Lucas---The Prince of Darkness."

The other bugaboo about Leyland products from this era is the bizarre plastic-cum-bakelite that they used for many parts. It was awfully
porous, and began deteriorating and cracking
the day it went into service and generally became
powdery at some point. Basically plastic with all
the faults of natural rubber :-)

To be fair, the one good bit in that tractor is
apt to be the diesel engine. I'd expect it to be
a Perkins 4-107 or 4-108. So long as they get good clean fuel, they run forever. This is the 'London Taxi Cab' motor. There are millions in
service, even in this country as industrial and
marine engines.

The self destructing plastic must be the reason for the experience of a friend several years ago with his Nuffield- the entire instrument panel/steering pedestal disintegrated as he was driving down the road. He wished someone could have been there with a camera- said he was trying to grab important looking stuff and hold it all together, while simultaneously trying to get the critter stopped. I don't think he ever fixed it, and it can probably still be found, resting quietly in the weeds near Yelm, Washington.
