Run into this quite freguently at my shop. Normally I will clean the inside and then put red coat sealer in it. If you get all the loose rust knocked loose, the red coat will cover all the other rust and seal it. Granted I am doing lawn mower tanks, so it is easier for me, the tanks are smaller and easy to handle.

Andy
I have a 10-20 tractor that had rust in the tank. A guy in our tractor club said to get 5 pounds of roofing nails and a piece of dog chain and some water , put it in the tank and strap it to a rim of a tractor and start the tractor, and put it in gear and let it go. Work really good on my tank , then went to napa and got some red koat to seal it . quick and eazy.

use the electrolysis on this website. Just go to restoration tips and then electrolysis. Email me and I will tell you how I used this to clean the inside of gas tank.

Just had a tank reconditioned that had a serious rust problem... took it to a radiator shop... they "boiled it out" in their chemical tank, cleaned it, then coated it... first class job! Problem solved!!! Had a tank cleaned by a rad shop a few months back, then coated it myself with a kit I purchased from Eastwood (they sell a variety of products to restore vintage cars & can be found on the 'net) Cost of having tank cleaned then coating myself was about the same as having the shop clean & coat... but having the shop do the whole thing worked out well for me this time... supposed to apply coating at (not less than) 70 degrees then allow tank to cure at that temp... I don't have a place to work, so in the winter months, I'm at the mercy of the weather... having the rad shop do the whole job was a no-brainer! HTH
Regards, DL

Andy:

You may want to take your fuel tank to a rad shop, get them to flush it, then seal it so that this problem will never come back (for a long time anyhow). I have heard that dextron (transmission fluid) is a really good rust protectant.

Look for fuel tank rust removers or fuel tank flushes in auto part stores.

Go to Eastwood's website and purchase their tank sealer kit. Follow the instructions and allow for a little extra time to do everything. I've had outstanding results with scaling rust in tanks.
