I have a 1650 diesel (65 HP) that has hydra power and i wanted to plow some clay ground with it. Will it pull a 5 furrow 16 in plow?

If so, what gear?

Thanks, homer

homer: You have the tractor, most plows that size are reducable by one bottom, so why no try it. If you later reduce it by one bottom, you have spare parts.

I was faced with much the same, way back when, Farmall 656D and a 5x16 semi mount plow. I looked at all the rusted bolts in plow, set with time. after an hour of procrastinating, I said to my hired hand," go try and plow that clay hill behind the barn." He did and it did, and 656 plowed 250 acres per year for 15 years pulling 5x16, always. Your not going to top the 3.5 mph by much, but hey you don't break much at 3.5 mph. Your 1650 pulling that 5x16 plow at 3.5 mph will plow more land per hour than pulling 4x16 at 5 mph.

If it"s clay like in western Pa & hilly, 4-14"s would be better.

Call me crazy, but that sounds like a lot of plow for that tractor, especially in clay.

I agree with Paul 4-14s or 3-16s.

It might not make it in road gear, but should for sure in 5th. :)

That's a 4-14 or 3-16 bottom tractor around here.
