Alright folks, I have been shopping around for a new tractor to use on my weekend farm. I have looked at the Mahindra, the Kioti, The Massey and Case, the Farmtrax, the Branson, and the Kubota. All in all, the Kubota seems to be the best tractor but they are about $2500 higher than the rest. I am looking for a 35 to 40Hp four wheel drive with a shuttle shift and front loader. Price I have gotten so far is $20,000 for the 3808. How does this sound to anybody else? I would very much appreciate any input before I make this big jump.

While you're at it, look at McCormick & Deere.

My neighbor bought a Ford 5000 over 20 years ago that was in his words "all worn out the day I bought it". He has used that tractor for his chores every day all those years and, other than routine maintenance, has spent virtually nothing on it. Again, in his words, "best tractor ever built".

How about saving your money and buying a nice, used machine? $20K? You can purchase an old Ford, JD, Oliver, IH, AC etc. with implements for less than $5000 and put the rest in your retirement account. Well maintained old machinery can be every bit as reliable as the new stuff and a hell of lot better made to boot.

What do you need 4 wheel drive for? I agree it looks nice, but given your description, doesn't seem warranted.

Think about servicing your new machine. When your solid state, microprocessor driven, carburetor free, injection/fitzer valve goes out on Saturday, ya think NH will send someone over? I am betting you don't have the diagnostic equipment, nor training to begin to evaluate what might be wrong (me neither), but you better hang on to your wallet once the warranty runs out.

I guess I think like a Depression era farmer, but no one every got rich by spending money unwisely.

G.O.M.

i traded a 1 1/2 year old john deere 4610 for a kubota 4630---kubota is much more tractor than the deere, kioti, new holland, etc--they are built for the long haul--not alot of plastic--hood & fenders--like the others or wires hanging all over the under side---they have superior hydraulics---well worth the extra $$

Four years ago, I needed a 20 to25 hp "estate" tractor. raised with John Deere tractors all my life, they were the first ones I checked. Kabota was more money but the BX2200 I ended up buying was a beefy little tractor that has gotten pushed at times, past its intended limits, and is still a great running unit with over 680 hours on it.

My son just bought a New Holland TC30 four wheel drive. It is rated at 33 HP and is a very good little tractor as long as you aren't going to do any real heavy work. It also has a NH bucket and will pick up a full one of wet sand. Plenty of power for average work. He walked away from the dealer for about $13,000 with a 4 year no interest plan. The dealer also threw in a new Woods back blade for $200.

Don't forget to look at dealer support for your new tractor. I just bought a New Holland TC40 for just under the money you are talking about. Great little tractor, does everything I need and more. Cannot stress dealer support enough. HTH
