I found a 96 F-250 with the powerstroke, 5-speed. ext.-cab, 4-wd with 109,000 miles on it. Nobody was home so I don"t know anything else about it. Anything in particular that I should look at? The only thing I didn"t like the looks of was the passenger side bed was startin" to rust out. How many dependable miles are in these engines?? Asking $9700...to high?? Thanks, Casey

Casey, Thats about $6000 less than what I ususally see that truck for around here. I'd so go for it with one 'qualifier'. I'd sure want a carfax on it to make sure there isnt something going on. A certain used truck dealer here buys flooded trucks from ins and reconditions them. Gets gobs of them that have been full of salt water. Email me for some more 'details'.

That engine will outlast the truck. Keep the oil changed and use the coolant additive. The F250 had ind. front ends. They are known to need ball joints and bushings pretty often. Part of that depends on the roads you drive on (dirt/rough). As was said - the flywheels can give trouble. I think the price is pretty good depending on the rust.

I have a 2000 F350... love it. I added a 4 position chip (160hp/330ft torque) - it unreal. Tons of power. Would never want to go back to a gasser!

Goto www.diesel-stop.com Its all about Ford diesels... more info on there than you will know what to do with.

I'll second the bad ball joints. The 100K mark is about when they need to be replaced for the first time - a pretty expensive ordeal. I'd have it checked for that before buying.

Hi Casey
I have owned 5 of the Navistar powered Fords and have had good luck with all of them. If the oil and coolant have been changed the motor should be good for another 2-300 thousand. The dual mass flywheels are expensive to repair, however I had 285 000 km on my last one with no troubles. My current 2000 has 160 thousand km on it now and is due for ball joints, but no drivetrain issues at a similar mileage to the one you are looking at. The price is at the top end considering the rust issue. Flat bed is a little better for farm use anyway. Take care Roy

I have a 97 powerstroke it has been an extremly reliable truck, very minor normal upkeep only so far 110,00 miles. Things to check for see if the cooling system has been maintened, check the turbo inlet pipe make sure it is clean. If you are gonna tow with it a power chip will be handy. Check www.dieselstop.com for a ton of info. Any other questions let me know...Jim in IA

Casey,
I just traded in a 1996 F-250 4x4 long box 5 speed with the 460 gas motor in it. It only had 91000 miles on it. The fuel pump in the front tank was acting up and needed to be replaced. Also the rear main seal was starting to leak. Only other problems I had ever had was an alternator 2 yrs. ago and just replaced the original battery last month. Heck of a truck! The '96-'97's are my all time favorite body style. The $9700.00 doesn't seem to bad.

I just bought a 99 super duty extended cab with auto and a astro cap. Just under 10,000 miles (Knew the old man that owned it). It runs really great. I had the oil changed right off and we bumped the tire pressure from 45 lbs to 55 lbs. and I now get some minor shaking in the steering wheel. I got it cheap enough to stand the cost of some repairs. $15,000.00 .
