And I'm not talking about lunch!

T_BONE and Ray (In) nailed it! (My trailer brake problems) I found a couple strands of stray copper wire in the 7 pin plug, and also found a ground wire (in a junction box under the trailer) that was almost broke in two. It is a 14 ga. stranded wire that had ONE strand left unbroken. Fixed the plug, fixed the ground, adjusted the shoes, and she's like new.

This site, and all it's inhabitants make for a vast wealth of collective knowledge. When people can diagnose a problem via the internet, well, that's just plain ol' handy to have around.

Thanks guys. (Now you don't need to worry about me running over you at the traffic light!) John

Hi John,

Glad you found your ground problem.

Now did you find out why the shoes were needing adjustment so often? With a bad ground you should have been using less adjustment as shoe wear would be less.

I'm guessing your shoe adjustment was over adjusted tight allowing for the bad ground as That way you could feel brakes with what little gound there was.

Did you set your controller gain at the recomended 25mph speed? If you adjust the gain control with every load at 25mph, you will probably have less shoe wear with having good brake preformance.

Howdy,

I'm guessing you're right about the "over-adjusting". The only way I could get good brakes was to have them dragging all the time. After I found the wiring problems, I jacked up each wheel, and found that 3 of the 4 wouldn't hardly turn by hand. I had to back off the adjusters about 4 or 5 clicks to get them "free" again.

I'm going on a 600 mile trip to gather up "stuff" I've bought off the internet. That'll tell me if the problem is solved. Before, 100 miles, and it would start loosing brakes.

Funny thing about all of this. I replied to someone on another site, just a few days ago, about a lighting problem they were having. My reply was, "99% of all problems with a trailer is related to the ground". I giess I need to listen to my own "free advice" sometimes.

Thanks again, John
