What are the 12 keys at the top of my keyboard for numbered F1, F2, F3 ..... all the way up to F12? Would I ever use them here at the YT site?

The computer we use at work (pharmacy software) uses a lot of function keys. Its not windows software (that i know of) only programed to pull up various applications that are used or needed.

If the machine is having troubles crashing etc. Keep pushing F8 while powering up. This gives you the option to start in "safe mode" and get out of some messes.

They are used to select different weapons and guns when playing DOOM.

I should add; I don't use them much but now that you mention them I oughtta think about learning more about them. Just like any keystroke sequence on your computer they can be "mapped" to do whatever shortcut you want them to. For example; if you're familiar with the ctl/alt/del sequence, I think you can map that to an "F" key or if you need to type your name; F key, or the Gettysburg Address; F Key, or a circle that fits perfectly within a hexagon; F key. Whatever you do a lot that requires keystrokes, Uncle Bill is giving you the opportunity to turn it into one keystroke,I think? Good question and not really O.T. Beats politics anyways.

F-10 starts the recovery mode. Mine crashed last year. that was the only way to get it back going. It took it back to the same as when it was shipped.

A.M., they are more of a shortcut tool for the program you are using (windows explorer -f5 refresh etc.) Like others have said, they can be programmed for program specific functions.-autocad etc.. Someone alot smarter then I, may be able to tell you how to program, ex. f5 tool talk, f6 farmall, etc. I don't know that though. Goodluck. Hound

The F-keys, or Function keys, were used a lot more when computers didn"t use the mouse. For example, it used to be that Word Perfect had a function for each F-key, and you had to know what each one did in order to use the program. In Windows, you can still do most things with the keyboard, but I think they mostly keep those available in case your mouse would quit working. Otherwise, the F-keys are rarely used anymore, and they"re just there for the rare occasion when you would need them.

They're Function keys. Different programs use them in different ways to automate sequences that would normally take several key presses to accomplish. For example most programs including Windows OS uses F1 to call up a help menu, F3 is normally used for repeat last sequence F12 maximizes/minimizes etc. I just found out by poking some of them that F6 causes me to loose all the typing I just did although I don't think that's a feature of YT Forum maybe just an erase function from XP. Go ahead and poke them to see what they do or look up thier meanings in your program documentation.
