mattie, mattie, mattie. Let me tell you something. I am a phone guy by trade. Phones (that thing hangin' on your kitchen wall) are almost a thing of the past. Many companies are doing away with their PBX's and replacing them with "voice over IP". It won't be long when you will be plugging in a phone into the back of your PC at home and using an IP address from a website to talk to people. Yeah, you can do it now in reverse with ISDN/DSL, but there will come a time when you'll get a more competitive rate through a website, using their WAN/LAN and T1 network trunking. I have a friend that does a 3 way video conference with his father and brother every Sunday and has for years. I go into libraries to repair video conference systems because some little kid isn't satisfied with the "tiling" he's experiencing while talking with his buddy in Tokyo.

Let these fellers go, they're cutting edge, and it keeps me working. And that kitchen wall phone in your house? Take it out and set it on a fence post, then take aim with that 30.06.

Hi Mattie,

I'm from the old school...had to do the DOS thing for years until windows finally came out.

So the first time John said to "ping" him, I did. Repeatedly, over and over and over. I just couldn’t figure out why he wanted me to 'ping' him; all that does is see if his computer is awake and is online. :>)

Turned out later that when he says ‘ping me’, he means "email me". :>)

Later,

Allan

LOL - I figured that out :)

I think I got on the web in 97. Anyways, before that, I had no web, no fax. My high-bred sister says, Jay, how am I to talk to you with no fax or internet? Simple I replied, phone? letters?

Allan, I overpaid for my 2nd business computer (Y2K stuff, bought it from my specialized software provider), because I didn't have a clue about windows, but knew DOS well. A few months after switching, I had a problem, took it to them, they couldn't figure it out. The pros had no clue. That's when I decided it was time to learn. No problem since then :)

Never look back. Didn't Ole Yeller say something like that?

Mornin' Jay,

Same here! I was living up there in Williston at the time and had a 386DX which lost a partition.

It was on a Friday evening, I call the shop and this guy wants $50 to get 'er up and going. I asked him why so spendy, and he tells me it takes special programs to do the job.

Hmmmm, special programs huh? At that time there really weren't a lot of "programs" to speak of, so I started a little investigating and of course found that all I needed was the was the darned F-disk.

I've never been back to a computer shop since; either the guy was lying or he didn't know anymore about the things than I did. :>)
