I am in the market for a four wheel drive 40 to 50 horse tractor. I am a weekend farmer but I want to be able to plow (three bottom), disk, bail hay, bushog and use a hole digger. In addition, I want hydraulics down as well as up. A geared transmission is OK. Can anyone make a suggestion for a model of tractor that would be user friendly, easy to work on and get parts for, and would be reasonably priced? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am basically interested in used tractors, but a new one would be considered if I could get a decent price.

Don't rule out a massey 165 or 175 that is a lot for your money. I have used a 165 to rake thousands of acres of hay and other heavy work ran fine never missed a beat. And the multi power is a great help only thing I did not like was ride. but most people won't spend 10-14 hours a day on one .

If youre looking at new/near new , a John Deere 5105 or 5205 would be in the hp range you specify. We have a 45 hp 5105 MFWD with a loader and have been very happy with it so far.It is 3 years old and will handle a 336 JD baler and wagon on my moderatly hilly ground.Hope this helps- BTW here in upstate NY good used MFWD tractors in the 40-70 hp range bring a pretty good buck , to buy what I wanted in a tractor 10-15 years old and add a loader was 3/4 the cost of the JD, so although new ones arent cheap, used ones arent either.

You said you want "hydraulics down", do you mean on the 3 point???? That pretty much doesn't exist these days!

Then you threw in that "reasonably priced" too!!!!! !!!!!

I was talking about hydraulics up and down on the bucket. I currently have an Allis WD with a trip bucket. It is OK but it really has its limitations.

In 2wd TB 100 (or whatever the new number sequence is from NH). Replaced the 5610S which replaced the 5610. New just a shade over $20,000. For fwd, I'd look at the 7610/7710/7740 series. Seems to be a lot of them, used equipment dealer here sells a lot of them.

Have you tried fastline online or machinery trader? There are usually several machines for sale on either. As far as buying out of state, I live in KY to, if you are buying used you are shooting the moon sort of anyway. I have family the used to be a Massey dealer in Springfield and they sell the Tafe tractor now. A 40 hp tractor with hyd, out board brakes for 10K , got me thinking. This is new with warranty looks like a 245 MF. Stevens over in Fairfield has the Farmtrac line. They have always treated me OK, unless we were pulling .

Hey, Kyhayman. Our farms are a stones throw apart, if you recall. I have been talking to the NH dealer in Bloomfield, but that is the only one I have talked to so far. He has the AC 185 2WD with loader that he wants $7500 for. I think that is about $5000 too much. Do you know a reputable dealer of used equipment in the area that I could talk to about finding a 4WD tractor? My farm is so hilly that my 2WD just don't work in the mud or snow. Thanks for the help and maybe we can get a cup of coffee sometime.

$7500 for an Allis 185 is a little high, depending on condition, but not really that bad. A 185 is a pretty capable machine and may actually be larger than you really want (if memory serves me, its close to 90 horsepower). If you could get it for closer to $6000, it might not be a bad deal at all.

Guys in Bloomfield are great to buy NEW stuff from (and parts), used is, as you found out, way pricey. For used equip, (dealer I was referring to), is Cocanougher Farm Equip in Salvisa. Been really happy working with him. My dad bought a 7710 series 2 2wd this summer from him. Low hours with a brand new loader (had to wait for it to come in) was $20K even. He's got a burned 7710 series 2 4wd that the 4wd looks good on, might find a good series 1 or 2 and put the 4wd on it. I'm thinking about buying it and would sure love to sell the 4wd to someone to cut my cost a little. I need the right rear axle and a bunch of PTO guts, plus it would give me a good engine to keep handy (got 6 tractors with that engine in them).

As far as other folks I've had good luck with on used tractors, Green's in Leitchfield, Hobby Dye and Read in Scottsville, and Houston Smith down in Benton. I may run into something too.

That cup of coffee sounds good. :-). Have a great day.

David
