I am considering buying my first tractor to haul firewood out of a hardwood bush nearby. I hope to find an old manure spreader on 20 inch tires to fill with wood. Should I look for an Ford 9n or a small MF? Any suggestions will be appreciated. I can do a fair amount of wrenching, and my lack of a big stack of money is limiting me to an older tractor. And just because I like them, I suppose. Thanks

thanks for the advice, I will be looking for a MF135 in southern ontario in the spring. I am cutting wood with a friend right now. I hope to make enough on firewood and lumber to buy my tractor.
Thanks
D

4x4 I have a small kubota compact that you might like 4x4 good for lawn and snow too.

Also have a large diesel 4x4 tractor it was actually used for a bush log tractor for most of it's life, but definately buy 4x4 or you'll wish you had...

Mike / Ontario,

I could also advise you on the price of a large tractor

HI D

Well we have used IHC H , AC WD's and B's .

I would go with the WD and Yes the MASSY is a good tractor .

WD cost 1000 -2500 35 HP weight around 3500

Narrow front in the woods , your not going to brake any thing.

Naroows on the hills WIDE are about 5% - 10 % safer
Weight the Tires is a must on hilly ground.

PULL FRONM THE HITCH ONLY. not from any other point hitch !!!!

Make hitch on the tractor as long as you can 6" to 8 " past the tractors back tires.

Use good chains and cables 5/16 ' and larger of good grade.

Front weight a good idea.

ABout the trailer VS old speader. Boy I would like to get and old PTO spreader and take off the back beaters and use it to unload.

Used for wood , dirt , compost , small load of hay etc.

Safty is a must , you need to go slow learn as you go. Never do any thing your not sure about, or you will be fixing your equitment, or you may loose your life.

My votes for an MF 135

Small, but plently of power to pull the trailers.

Dont buy a Ford N series. In my experience with them (dont bite my head off people) they are not as reliable as 3 cylinder 135s, and are not realy all that much cheaper often as well.

Also youll find the diff lock on the 135 helpful, Ns dont have that, the lower gears, and just the fact that you know your not going to run out of power.

D,

My dad has a 9n and though I think it is a neat machine as a collectible, I'd would not chose to work the thing regularly, mainly because it has the break pedals on opposite sides. I suppose once you get used to it, this can be as workable as any other set up, but I would not want to be learning to make it second nature while manuvering among trees, bolders, on hills etc.

we'd used AC WD45's and D17's and a 9N ford but it is pretty light.. we keep the wheels in narrow to fit between the trees but its not as safe... protect the radiator (could buy fuel oil for the cost of the radiator repair). You'll definately want some weight and good traction tires as the woods floor probably hasn't been packed down by driving and can get pretty soft and muddy. we like heavy ply truck snow tires on the front as they don't get peirced by sticks quite as bad but they don't steer as good as tractor tires.. ROPS are nice for safety however they can get in the way with trees.. wide front can be a bit safer, easier to steer and less likely to get both wheels stuck in a hole at the same time but are less manuverable and you can snap an axle off if 1 wheel hits a hole.. narrow fronts are easier to manuver in tight places but (see above)... good luck and be safe.

D If I where you I would look for a massey a lot more rugid than a ford, massey has hi-lo range in tranny but don't forget to weight front end down when pulling heavy loads and if you start spinning and rear grabs and get good bite front end will come up and maybe over on top of you. And make sure tires are full of fluid this helps alot when pulling .and what ever you buy get a wide front end have fun and be safe

Hi, I'd vote for the smaller ones like the Allis B. We used an Allis B, when I was at home, had enough pulling power, and narrow enough not to cause much woodlot damage. I'd also vote for the idea of a trailer, vs. a manure spreader. Wood enough of a job, without lifting it over the high sides of a spreader. I currently use a Int.444., it does s great job. JW.

Well if thats all you plan on useing it for I'd look at an Allis B or a Farmall a,b,c etc. All of them cn be had for about half of what an 8N or 9N sells for at least where I live

We have always used a Farmall A for pulling wood out of our bush using an old manure spreader and or wagons. Never have had a problem pulling it with the A.

Well almost any small tractor will probanbly do OK at what you want. I would look for one with low gears as you may want to creep over rocks, stumps and other rough areas. Fords, unless they have the Sherman transmission, don't have the lowest of low gears. They are a good tractor, but I don't think they are as good as some folks seem to think. You might want a tractor with foot brakes, some had only hand brakes which can be harder to operate when you need to steer too, as in the woods. You can't just use one brake or hold the wheel with a knee sometimes. Fairley high clearence and a well protected radiator would be usefull too. You can always fabricate a radiator guard which might be a good idea anyway.

You might get more use with a dump trailer, than a old spreader when doing wood and alot of other jobs.

I have had the same thought. I have heard you should watch road speed if you have to travel on very far at all. I have seen some Farmall Cubs around here and those always looked pretty handy since they could go thru a tight trail, But I looked at top gear and I think they max at about 6 mph like a garden tractor. Good luck, of ones I have seen the WD looks like a lot of tractor for the money. Seems like small stuff gets expensive, I guess since they are easy to take to shows. Good luck

Rick, I own 2 cubs myself, and really like them for my use (mowing, light plowing, gradign, etc.). For hauling much wood in rough terrain they are a little light though. A cub without wheel weights will run aobut 1400 pounds and it doesn't take a very big load of wood to outweigh you and create a problem on hills or if the ground is muddy. You are correct about the 6 mph ground speed.

Yes. I assume you would need a small trailer to go behind the cub. Around here a lot oguys just use a ATV with small triler. Narrow trail is advantage.

Another reason the little Cub prices are amazing!
