I am looking at purchasing either a John Deere M
or a Farmall Super C. It would mainly be used on a small farm mostly for a large garden. I also need to pick up some accessories. I am a JD man at heart, but the Super C seems pretty versatile. Any suggestions on which would be

I would not suggest either one. The super C might be ok if it had a fast hitch. You could go up from the JD M and pick the model 40 for the same or a little more money that way you could get a three point hitch.

Howdy,

I realize that choices were only JD M and Farmall Super C but have you considered the farmall A? I own a 1944 A and it is a super tractor for garden work. Small, versatile, fair fuel usage, fantastic for plowing and cultivating, plenty of power (especially if you up to a super a), etc. The only gripe I have with the A is it's hard to mount accessories. They're pretty frustrating at first but after a few times you get pretty efficient at the job. I've never used the other two tractors but after what Missouri Boy said (and it sure sounds like he's had experience with both) I'd say lookin at another tractor is a good idea. Plus, the A is pretty cheap. I got mine for 700 and haven't had to touch the engine yet (5 years of work). God bless.

Are you agile enough to be able to get into the seat on the M? It is one of the hardest tractors to mount. The Super C is a two row cultivating tractor and the M is a one row if that makers any difference. I never did think the Dubuque engines were as good as the Moline ones but the smaller IHC engines were not quite as good as the H and M engines. The mounted moldboard plow on the M and MT were very poor and the mounted plow on the super C was not greatly better. Folks, thia is only my opinion. Please do not scold me.
