Old Tractor Subject.... :)

Okay, I need somebody smart.

Got this old tractor, it really doesn't matter the make.

I want to put power steering on the old sow using one of those Char-Lynn actuator/orbital motor gizmos.

Just acquired a live pump (no valving just a straight gear pump), which is driven by the timing gears, but all I wanna do is to run that power steering motor gizmo; heck with anything else.

I want to plumb into that Char-Lynn, thru and out to the can.

Do I need to have some kind of a pressure release or a pressure proiority valve thing? Those that use auto pumps don't 'cause they are built in on those types.

Okay, I know you all know the answer to this and if you don't answer me back, I'll assume you're still torqued off at me about my not wanting to go vote or some such thing. :>)

Thanks,

Allan

Been following your post and get a kick out of them. Professing to know nothing about the pump in question, I can help you keep this political so's not to confuse anyone. I guess it will depend on whether the pump spins to the left or the right..... :-)

Allan, Is that tractor of yourn a Damercrat, or a Rebublikun? Dang it all, you know this is a political forum, not just somewhere you can arbitrarily discuss tractors. Have you lost yer mind?

Sorry you may have to post your tractor question on another forum. Tractor Talk is presently dedicated to politicians and their lackey chestbeaters.

But then you are a pretty good sort so perhaps squeezing in one tractor question won't precipitate serious criticism.

Char-lynn torque generators used on older tractors are rated from 3 to 6 gpm at max 1000 psi.

There is no relief valve in the torque generator, hyd circuit is off-center/followup and the rotating element. You will need a relief in the piping or the pump.

There is torque generator info at the bottom of the page at the link. A common torque generator found on older tractors is the 217 series 3.5 gpm unit.

Hey, I'll still talk to you. I recognize that pump. Have had one for years but never could find a manafold to hook it up to various things. To your question, I think it would be wise to have some kind of pressure bypass. That pump might have a pretty high volume..more that the other unit can handle. I have in my junk box some little valves that were designed to bypass "shock" loads when running hyd motors. Some think like that? Or even tie in an old gresen valve some where in the circuit?
