Mornin'! It's a rainy, cool fall morning here. Got nothing better to do than look up prices on RED tractors. (I need to get a life....)

OK, I found listings on several 966's.

1.) 8000 hours, T/A not working, smokes, 25% rubber. Open station. Needs paint. $3900

2.) 5400 hours, new paint, new clutch, T/A good, NEW 18.4/38 radials. Cab w/h-ac. Overhauled 200 hrs ago. new injectors 25 hours ago. $10.500

3.) 7700 hours, Older re-paint. T/A good, Underhaul at 6000 hrs. 80% rubber. Cab w/h (ac doesn't work) Full front weights/3 pair rear weights. $7,950

4.) 3900 hours, original paint (looks new) Good T/A, 80% 20.8/38 duals (Axle mount) Full weights, cab w/ h-ac. One owner, well cared for. Full service records from original dealer. All manuals included. $10,900

5.) 8000 hrs. Rough. T/A not working. Low hydraulic pressure. 75% rubber. 18.4/38 rim-mount duals. Engine replaced (NEW) at 3400 hrs. $4,750

I've found several others, but these would indicate "typical" mid-west pricing, I would think. John

I GOT NO IDEA! I don't have most of the answers either. I just looked up a few tractors in "Fastline", and "U.S. Farmer". You don't see many MM tractors for sale in those publications. John

Hey! Thanks a bunch!

It seems like if ya find a good one, the price is about what the darned things cost new 30 years ago.

And, for what it is worth, I don't care what your wife has been tellin' me, I think you're an OK guy! :>)

Thanks John,

Allan

You ought to be buying John Deere tractors...The sell, in almost every case, for WAY more than they did new. My 4440 is worth about 125% of its original purchase price. The thing is, I'd give that much in a New York minute, for another one just like it. It's been that good of a tractor.

And when I mention your name around the wife, she just smiles, and tells me to "Say hello to STUBBY". John

Ya know John, I hafta agree with you. We have a 4640, 4430, 4020. My grandpa has a 4030, 3020, 3010. My other Grandpa had a 4240 and 4440. My Father-in-Law has a 4430 open station, 4020, 3020, 1050. The place I work for has an 8300, two 8110s, 7710, 4450 MFWD.

The odd man out is my dad's 1086. It was a horrible tractor to shift but it could outpull the 4640 due to an aftermarket MFWD and it went faster down the road(I saw "was" because it's sitting in the back of the shed with yet another blown engine).

If I ever get into farming, I hope to own a 66 series tractor. They're cheap power and all the die-hard IH guys seem to own at least one of that series. Must be the best series they made, eh? Now, if I could get the front end from the 1086 to bolt up...

You ever hear of that 1468(or is it 1568)? Supposedly, it was a V8 and you could shut off 4 cylinders to rake hay or other light duty work. Wonder if they had any reliability issues since they don't continue to make them. It sounds like a good idea....

Odd ball out. We were all green, but this is several years ago. Newest when still farming was a 4620. Odd ball was my uncle's 766 gas. Most worthless tractor I ever used. Too big and way under power. We used to joke it was rated with shetland ponies. I'm not knocking IH. I've used most of them over the years. Interesting you mentioned the 1468. There is a "Stuck & Troubled" post today about pulling the front axle out from under a truck. I was driving a feed delivery truck in a very wet spring. Had to back down to the feed bin to unload. Got stuck before I got there. Farmer hocked on with his 1468. I should have been watching closer, but he hooked up on the rear axle, to pull me back where I needed to be. Everything was fine until the 2nd 4 of 8 kicked in. Pulled the rear axle right out from under the truck. Needless to say, boss was not happy.

The V-8's didnt hold up as well as the six cylinders of the same HP. Also, they were parent bore (throw-away block) as compared to the wet-sleeve 6-cylinders. The V-8 thing was largely a marketing thing to appeal to the younger set that equated number of cylinders with greatness and liked the looks of the twin chrome stacks.

The V8 engine used in the 1468 and 1568 was the DV-550 truck engine. When IH truck discontinued their use they had an inventory of surplus engines and farm division used them in tractors. They were a good dependable engine.
