My 4430 start hard under 50 degrees, seem to crank fine, just smokes and once in a while fires and stalls. It will start with either and if plugged in. Starts fine if it is over 50 outside. It runs good and has clear smoke and good power. Seems to be worst if it sits for a couple of weeks. What can I do to improve this? Is their a air intake preheater that I can add? Help me please.

the injection pumps on these machines have a 'built in' excess fuel devices that supplys more fuel to the injectors when cold/fresh started. older device is mechanical and newer is hydraulic. make sure the device works properly before using other devices.

Your 4020 should start the easiest since it is naturally aspirated and as such will have the highest compression ratio. This results in hotter cylinder temps due to compression of the air. The 4430 is turboed and to accomodate the extra air rammed in at rated power, the compression ratio is lowered. This results in less heat of compression being generated when cranked as the turbo is not spinning and ramming air until it finally fires up. My 4630 needs a whiff when it is below 50 also and is normal.

If i remember correctly Deere came out with an update kit to the pump that solves this problem , several years ago. Check with your Deere dealer and find out

We've got a 4640 with the same problem. once it gets below 40 degrees, we better have it sitting where we want it to sit for the rest of the winter. I wouldn't cry too long if that tractor rolled into a ditch and caught fire.

Our 4430 starts well if we use the same procedure as Doug. The 4020 is the best starter we have. Doesn't need ether or plugged in until we hit 0 degrees. 'course it's also the coldest to drive at that temp...

I enever understood why our 1086 w/1486 engine was better at starting than the Deeres. Now if we could keep from blowing up the engine every 500 hours and from messing up the TA every 1000, it might be a likable tractor.

Guess you could build a 40X60 heated shop to keep it in... Let me know where you are so I can try out this shop when it's done. I'll do a few projects in it to see if it meets my approval.

i think if i had that kind of engine problems with a red one i would find a new mechanic.
i have seen a 1486 run over 12,000 hours without a wrench to it.

Same problem here, Make sure you pump up the fuel by the hand pump on the right side of the engine below the injector pump, we spray ether ( 5 short shots)into the air cleaner after pulling off the rubber boot in front of the radiator, then crank it. I 've been having good luck lately ( cause I ran out of ether!) with plugging in the block heater. John's right, it needs help, but this is how I make it work untill then:)

Johnsdeere, I would be willing to say that your 4430 probably has in excess of 8000 hrs on it, You didn't say if it had been O/H anytime. So here goes..... .The injectors sounds like they are getting real sloppy. Instead of atomizing the fuel into the cylinder (very fine mist). It is kinda just spitting it in there. Hence the hard starting under 50 degrees. Check with a good local DSL shop and check on a set of rebuilt injectors, or getting yous redone. Pump could need some attention too. Later,
John A.
