I found a 850 deere compact tractor for sale and need some help. The tractor has a 60 inch woods belly mower under it and by the looks of the tractor it may be all its ever done. It shows 2700 hours and is gear driven and no front end assist. I was wanting it for a modern all purpose tractor, mostly mowing but maybe 4 ft box blade or front end loader. What is the life expectency of the diesel engine assuming it was maintained. What the weakn links of these tractors if any. And of corse value. It is straight and clean with no evidence of ever being repainted. It surely must have been shedded more than it set out as the paint is really decent. They want 6000.00 for it and are willing to let me take it home for the weekend to try it out. Any thoughts, anything I should look for while I have it home. What is a fair price? Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.

What is the HP on the 850? I like JDeere as do many others, it is fair to say that it is likely the best all around lawn machine going considering the INCREDIBLE support for especially older machines, great parts pricing comparatively speaking, I'm not real familliar w/the 850, but I recommend if your buying a compact tractor, make sure it has all the features of a large tractor, I recently picked up a JD 400 the machine is a 20HP kohler vtwin, power steering, front and rear PTO, hydraulic lift, power steering, and DOUBLE wetlines pre-plumbed on quick disconnects at the front with pump and controls, the machine is about 20 yrs old, it looks and runs beautifully, I expect it to have 15-20 years left with proper oil changes and grease. There is nothing worse than finding out that you have limited yourself for the future, problem is sometimes we//you don't know what you'll want in the future, the above features I mentioned on the JD400 is the minimum I would expect on a compact tractor (except I missed 4x4, so I immediately wound up purchasing a replacement machine and am now forced to sell the JD400 (because I limited myself which is my point to you))....Mike

I think the deal has gone south. The first guy said aroud 6000. I was hoping to buy just under the around he is thinking is 6400 thats around 6500 to me. I had never even looked at anything like this before so it was sorta an impulse purchase. A good nights sleep helped. I like the rig, its like a 1010 only smaller but still with a real tractor feel, not like some of the gummy bear looking things they are currently calling compacts. 6400. is a lot of cash to me just mow the yard and maybe run a box blade. The A farmall I currently mow with only set me back about 1200. and it is a mowing machine, five times that money for 30 year old junk vs 60 year lod junk seems like a stretch. Maybe not if I had shopped around but I have not. Thanks for your foresight on looking ahead, to future needs, sound advice I think I'll wait and see what I might need. Thanks again. SN

I'm thinkin 850 is about 25 HP. I paid $6K for a 950 with loader, back blade, bush hog, about the same hours, in good shape, new clutch, power steering. All are Deere which raises the price because of the name, not ability. Is an ok little tractor, and met my needs for as late in the season that I got it. If ask me I paid too much for it. I'll clean it up and put it on the market during the winter for something that will meet my needs for next season that's larger, and cost less. The Woods is a $1,400.00 finish mower new. Deeres cost and bring $$$ for the name. You decide. Don't lose sleep over it though.

Mark in, I think you got a great buy on that 950 especially with that equipment list. Hows about selling that little jewel to a poor Mo. school teacher, I"ll treat you real good. You made a power buy on that bugger makes the 6400, for the 850 with only a woods seem like a rip off. They have a 950 right beside it but I did not price it. It looked a little large and heavy for yard work but maybe I should ask. Are both tractor fairly trouble free or not? Sorry about the long delay on response, I have trouble getting time to do the computer thing. Thanks for any information.
