Went out today to try and plant some stuff in the veggie garden today. I knew it would be a lost cause before I ever went outside because of the 3 days of rain last week. Started raining last Thursday and did not stop till Sunday. (tropical storm Matthew)
Any way as expected the ground is to wet to do anything so here I am with no place to plant. I know should have got out there last week before the rains.
Then I see the summer tomato garden. Those plants are long gone and that bed is covered in black plastic mulch so lets try it. I pull up the old plants and pull back the plastic and see nice almost dry ground.
While I have used a plastic mulch in the winter before but this is my first year trying it in the summer. It worked great. I thought it would burn the roots with our summer heat but no. Tomatoes grew well with minimal weeds and now I just peal the plastic back put down a little fertilizer and bug killer. Run the tiller over it once and we are ready to go.
I am sold on black plastic mulch for winter and summer gardens.
Well its off to the feed store before they close to get the plants so I can get them in the ground.

John, I know what you mean about the rain last week.We are having a pond on our place dug deeper. We did ok for about 3 weeks working almost everyday(about 170 14yd.loads)and then it rained.I collected 7" in my rain guage Thursday-Monday morning. But you know I am really thankful to get this water from above,I even prayed for it.All I have to do now is find the pump!! By the way I live near Jackson,L.A.Good luck with your garden.
