My neighbor"s Farmall 300 rims rotted at the valve stem hole from solution and age. He has extra rims that are 12" wide (used for rice tires??). Can a 14.5" tire be safely and effectively be mounted on 12" wide rims?

Thanks, Schmidty

Thanks for everyones input. The tire guy is on his way and we"ll be plowing in no time! You guys were right, they are 14.9 X 38 and they say 13 inch rim. Sorry to ask uneccessarily, but I knew I could count on the people on this forum to help us get back to the field!

Gotta plow,

Typical confusion regarding rim size and tire size-due to the change in tire size marking from several decades ago. You can safely go one inch bigger or smaller than your rim size. BUT- since the 60s, tire sizes indicate NOT the rim size, but the widest part of the tire- the bulge or maximum cross-sectional width. A twelve inch rim can handle an eleven, twelve, or thirteen inch tire, using the old size marking. A 13 inch tire is now a 14.9 inch. I've never heard of a 14.5 inch, but if is a 14.9, it can work with a 12 inch rim, although it might bulge a bit, compared to if it were mounted on the 13 inch rim.

Some tires are made to be mounted on narrower rims. Tires on my 2444 state 13.9 for use on 12 inch rim.
They are Titan brand.

Hi Ben,

Heck, I thought all tires were that way; 'bout 2" or thereabouts wider than their proper rim....??

You are probably right, most of them look that way. This is the first time I had noticed it embossed into the tire though. Maybe just not observant enough.

Are you sure there not 14.9 x 38. Lot of people
will disagree with 12 inch rims, but there is hundreds of super M and others with 14.9 x38 tires
and 12 inch rims out there.

Schmidty,

Sure, but are you measuring the rim right? Inside bead wall to inside bead wall?

I think a 12" rim is what a 14.5 tire calls for isn't it?

I'm almost positive it says 14.5. It's a Co-op tire. I measured the rim outside to outside but the lip isn't that wide (maybe 3/8"). The reason I'm concerned is that the "rotten rims" roughly measure about 10" wide, and the tire bead isn't "tucked in" all that far. I hope we can use the spare rims he has, as the tractor is a good old gal, but hasn't been treated very well in her later years. Probably worth less than new rims.

Thanks, Schmidty

Put the tires on the rims. You have 14.9x38s, they are recommended for 13 inch rims. You can put one size over or one size under safely on the rim. There are many tractors out there with exactly this setup. Remember you will not be going that fast with your tractor, just be careful when seating the beads so that you don't hurt yourself or someone around you.HTH JohnG
