Just traded for a tractor that had a busted up loader on it. The guy said it was that way when he got it and he didn't fix it. I also guess who he got it from didn't either. So why would some one do that instead of fixing it. Just gets my goat when I see something looking that bad. Well when I get it back on it will be in good shape again but boy it sure is takeing a lot of work fixing it. Most of had at least 25 cracks in the thing.

Well, old, maybe you need to get your overalls off the line before the goat eats them, but some people (like me) look at the action and reaction. If the action is nebulous, so is the reaction. My motto is don't fix it if it ain't broke. The supplement to that is if it's a pain to fix, try to figure a way to justify using it like it is.

Oh well, with my retirement right around the corner and lots of time on my hands, maybe I'll convert to more of a purist.....big maybe.

Just kiddin. Somethings need fixin, and some just need to be fixed. Just depends.

Have a goodun.

Mark

It's a common behavior for all people. As a former Fleet Manager (and farm boy) I saw it all the time. People do what's important to them as individuals. Some farmers (and fleets) clean, repair and service their equipment - some take the attitude "just fix it enough to get it through harvest" however it never gets properly repaired at slack times. I've had people ask "how often should I check the oil/coolant/etc. in the tractor during harvest" when I told them check it daily or put a fluid level gauge on it they were resistant - too much time & trouble. Same attitude toward preventative maintenance. "Why should I replace the fuel filter at the (scheduled) hours? - there's not that much dirt in it." Well, how much down time & loss of crop can you stand when the fuel filter packs up at the height of harvest because you ran it twice or three times as long as recommended? Anyway enough ranting for today - thanks for listening.

Working on equipment for a living I see this all the time. It has always amazed me that someone will let what would be a simple repair go because "it isn't a major problem" or because "they don't have the money to fix it right now". Problem is they keep using the machine and the problem gets worse and worst til it's no longer so simple to fix and/or the machine just plain stops working right when they need it most. Then I get a call and they get a really big bill for a major repair...then want to bit-- and grumble about it costing so much to fix "a simple problem". Happens all the time, and I've yet to find a real reason beyond plain old stupidity. Just my .02

Its not such a mystery- could be lack of time, lack of skill (just because you have a tractor and loader doesn't mean you have the skill to fix it), or lack of equipment (welding up cracks on a loader is considerably harder if you don't have a welder). Seems like most folks have some weak points in how they go through life's tasks. Let he who is without sin. . .
