My Massey 35 trans is stuck in second gear. Lifting rearend to relieve torque does not release. Tried to pry gear with screwdriver thru filler no luck. Tried to drive pin out of gear shift to access better but cannot get pin to come out.Any suggestions how to remove pin or get gear unstuck without breaking apart the housing?

David,

Try to get into the habit of pushing down on the gearshift a little instead of lifting it up (as is natural when going to reverse, 2nd) It will almost never do it if you can do that. Keep working at it; it will come out if you get the tension off the gears. Hope this helps!

Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear for first & reverse and the shift fork for second & third. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar. If it is hung in first or reverse pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse Pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If it is hung in second or third. Pry the second and third shift fork forward if it is hung in second. If it is hung third pry the shift fork toward rear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them

Dean, I followed your directions and easily got the transmission unstuck out of second gear.
Thanks for the detailed response.

Had that happen once to my Massey 135 and boy it was hard to get it unlocked. It took a while of pulling and allmost breaking the lever to do it. I posted on the Massey site and they give a way of doing it. I had got mine unstuck befor posting and it has not happen since. Mark H.
