Need to cut some ditch banks and brush at field edges. Have looked at some three point side mowers and after picking myself up from the sticker price shock, have decided to make my own.

Has anyone made or seen a homemade ditch bank cutter? Any plans? I’m looking to cut two inch stuff.

I think I can use something like a four foot bush-hog (do they make these – I have seen lots of five foot models, but can’t remember seeing a four foot one), place a hydraulic motor on it for motion (any suggestions for brand, size or shock capability), build a three cylinder articulating arm with breakaway capability and some type of control panel for control (any ideas here would be a big help). This would all be placed on a three point setup. Any ideas?

My tractor is a JD 5310 (about 55 HP). It has lots of hydraulic capability and has something called “power beyond” which I use on a back-hoe hookup.

I am open to all ideas and thoughts. This will be this winters project.

Russ

If you have that backhoe just use it to hang the mower on instead of the bucket, it would swing of to the side enough to do that and also extend out far enough to reach without getting to close, might want to put a dual on that side to help the counterbalance that the foot would not be able to do as you drive but you could parke and swing the mower the same as you would the bucket

Why not just hook up that backhoe and start leveling the place up so you can mow it with a normal mower ????

Russ,my dad owns a 4' bush hog made by modern equipment.I'm not sure if it could stand much of the 2" brush cutting you speak of though. You may be able to contact a local implement dealer and get the skinny on gear box H.P.ratings and abilities of hydrualic motors.Wonder if you might check on hiring someone to cut it then keep it sprayed.Just a few thoughts, have a good day.

Russ,

Why put yourself thru all that hassle?

Why not just hook up to a darned sickle bar mower and go mow the dude? They work great, especially for just those kinds of tasks like you are talking about.
