I am starting to work on my new "toy" that a neighbor gave to me. Its a 1945 Silver King. I had to get a new battery for it cause the old one was really old and couldn't turn the engine over too well. I thought with a new battery things would change, but it acts the same way. Cranks a turn or two then it stops. This tractor has been in side for the last 10-12 years, but has not run so I thought the engine must be a little snug. I got the tractor running tonight with a pull and had it going for about half hour. It ran pretty rough, but thats not a big deal right now. I tryed re starting it and it did the same thing So my question is what could be causing my starting problem? It cranks over fine with out the plugs in. Could the starter be rusted up??
12 voltis out of the question. I always like to keep the tractor original looking. I always say if the tractor started fine years ago why shouldn't it start now with its 6 volts. Any help would be great.
Jason

the guys are right you need the very thick cables....but here's a trick i use many times with 6 volt systems..imeadiately after you have tried the starter , try touching different spots on the cables and connections, a bad connection will be hot...be carefull sometimes they are very HOT.....you will sometimes find the hot spots(bad connections) in areas that you would never guess....if an entire cable is hot its entire length then the cable is way too small to carry the load, or you have a starter draw

When I got my SK, it already had a cheapo battery cable on it. It starts fine on six volts but the cable does get hot and I should replace it. One thing I had problems with is the mechanical switch on top of the starter. Take it apart and check the terminals inside and make sure they are clean, mine had some buildup on it from years of use. I also noticed that if the bolt holding all of this switch together is tightened, the terminal inside could rotate and then not make contact with the terminal that is pushed with the starter rod. So, I tightened everything with the switch off the tractor but connected to the battery. Then, I installed the switch with the two small screws and then connected the pivot and rod for the starter button. This fixed the problem for me. One thing I did just to try the starter was used a jumper cable to jump straight from the battery to the terminal on top of the starter with the switch removed. This took the switch out of the loop and allowed me to verify the starter worked okay.

Jason,

Get on down to the NAPA store and get some 0 or 1 guage wires. They don't have them on the shelves, get the guy at the counter to get them from the back.

These guys are right, a 4 guage wire will fry in a matter of minutes. Corrosion is your enemy on this one.

6Volt should work but everything MUST be clean, bright and tight and in good repair, any dirty connections/slightly dragging starter is gonna cause it to fail. Are you sure you're hooked up right(positive vs negative ground)?

you need good heavy cables for 6 volt. them cheapies won't cut it. Might be a good idea to take the starter off and clean and lube it.

I also agree that you need good heavy cables and the connections have to be clean. Also the commutator in the starter has to be clean. That is the part where the brushes run on.
