The question of the new format is a hot topic to some, however I have what I consider a larger concern.....

The direction the topics are taking, seems to be heading in the direction of mostly politics and other non tractor related subjects...

I come for tractor information sharing and things like that. I have no objections to OT posts, but they seem to be becoming the main number of topics.....

OT posts about your truck, your family, job, health problems, etc help us to understand each other better. However the political ones just seem to create problems...Kim has very graciously provided alternate forums for these types of discussions and such, but they seem to be growing in number in the tractor specific sections.....

Just becoming more disappointed in the tractor related forums content lately.....

I do hate to see what is probably the best old tractor board go downhill....

Well off my soapbox....

The thing that I wonder about is this: If you don't want to read OT posts, who forcing you to click on them? I am looking around and I don't see anyone pointing a gun to my head, telling me to click on the OT posts. We are blessed in this country with the ability for us to actually discuss these things. If you don't want to read the OT posts, then it is your right and privledge to ignore them. Others obviously enjoy this freedom and take advantage of it.
Lighten up.
As far as checking the oil on an "M", I thought that what that gage on the hood was for,,,, when it reads in the "danger" zone, then you should add some oil, cause it's out. :)

Good Luck

Britt

Ben, In addition to talking about tractors, farming, equipment, and other related topics, we do at time talk about politics and other unrelated topics. If unrelated topics bother you as well as some others who would rather limit discussions to tractors, then perhaps you would also rather that we not respond to someone posts a simple prayer request. We have had numerous people who have done just that for a multitude of reasons, and thank God there are those among us who are sensitive to those requests as I"m sure they are greatly appreciated by those who make such a request. Ben, whether you agree with everything that is said here or whether you dont, the fact is that I"m sure that there are subjects discussed in your own home that you would rather not be brought up. Its no different here. I speak not for anyone else, but while I disagree with a lot of what a lot of folks here say, and agree with a lot of what a lot of other folks here say, I am not offended, and could care less if I am called names. When that happens, I consider myself the winner of the debate since I caused the other person to exhaust all reason so that all he has left is name calling. Actually, I have read and participated in some passionate discussions and have the utmost respect for someone who is willing to stand up for his convictions. When politics are discussed, it is normal for opposing points of view to be voiced, but Heck, that happens even among family and close friends. I consider us all here as close friends and a family of folks who were brought together through the love of Old Iron and the miracle of the internet.

I think that you're right. I've posted twice in "Off Topic" because that's where they belonged, and were political. And the other night, I posted about "Eminent Domain", and looked for "Off Topic" to post it in, but am not seeing it anymore - I considered looking at "Kountry Life", and posting "Eminent Domain" there, but after giving it some thought, figured since it often involves farms or loss of farms, and decided to post it under tractor talk. I did post a question about my Deere on tractor talk some time back. Those have been my four posts.

Here's something I noticed the other night, and the new format sparked it. I went and looked at another site, and the format there is/was very similar to the proposed format. But what caught my eye was a post about a Deere 1010 leaking near the 3 point, asking questions as to what it might be. I'd noticed that same person posting the same question here a few days earlier, and got answers about the 1010 not being one of Deere's better tractors. I guess that person went over there because he or she didn't get the answers that they wanted, and got specifics about what part of the 3 pt held the hydraulic oil, and what part was dry for the clutch, etc.

It made me think. Perhaps we (me included) are spending too much time talking about things that don't pertain to tractor talk. But at times, they are fun, and at times they are not.

You might be right Ben. And then again, sometimes all work and no play makes Jack a dull Mark (me). I can live with more tractor talk than Presidential debates.

Hope I didn't ruffle anyone's feathers.

Ben-
People have tractors, people have opinions, people post their opinions. It's all part of life and what makes this a living forum instead of a static forum.
Plus-it's political season right now, so don't worry about it; things will come back around.

Every once in awhile someone gets all teary eyed because of posts that veer away from tractor issues. That's usually because the topics they object to represent a form of truth that's about 180 degrees away from the complainer's position.

There is still enough "tractor stuff" on this board to not become concerned about some OT posts.

...lack of good topics...might be because most of us are working like heck right now, trying to get fall work done....so maybe the oil checking, 6 to 12 volt conversions, and identify this questions will keep coming until, we are all back to tackling some projects in the shop. Hound

Hound, While it may not be a lack of good topics, your comment is not without merit. I"m probably not alone, and many of the folks here may be experiencing the same thing. I love old tractors. That is a given. I also farm and am around old tractors and combines, and planters, and drills, and tilling equipment, and sprayers, and trucks, and you name it. When I"m not planting or spraying, or disking, or operating a combine, or driving a truck to the elevator, I"m working on a planter or a sprayer, or a tractor or a combine, or what else have you. Sometimes even though I love old tractors, every now and then it is a relief to discuss something else for a change. Tractors and farming is my life, but not my whole life. Some of the O.T.discussions here allow a diversion and give variety to me s well as I"m sure it does others, and I see no problem with the O.T"s. Besides, they are easily ignored if that is ones choice.

Ben this site is just like the little diner that everybody meets for coffee, and do you only chat about one thing. I'll bet not this is our cyber cafe and we don't need censored about what we can discuss if thats the way you want then start your own site ,it would get so boring that people would lose interest. (long one) I belive most poeple posting here enjoy mixing it up.If you want censorship move to iraq .

I like to help, but sometimes I get tired of problems. Also, the Archives are full of quality answers and most questions could be answered from there. Sometimes, I just don"t feel like "pitchin in".

Sometimes I just want to share things with what I consider to be my friends so I get OT when the mood hits me.

So I"m guilty of variance.

Sorry,

Mark

Mark,

In the future, could you please keep your comments limited to just the two subjects of putting an alternator on an old tractor and baling up a little grass?

Please don’t go wandering off like you do. :>)

By the way Allan, can you tell me how you check the oil in a 1940 Farmall M? I know the little petcock thingys on the pan have something to do with it, but if you are facing south, do they turn clockwise or counterclockwise, and it you are south of the equater, is it reversed? These questions have plagued me for a long time now. And hypothetically, once these are open and oil is dripping out, is this also how you fill it back up with oil, and if so, where do you get the syringe to squirt the oil in through that little hole. Thanks, Allen in Missouri (Harley)

Nope,

Ya can only fill 'em in one of two ways.

First either fill 'er upside down and let that ol’ black oil just dribble back in dat little hole, or the easiest way I’ve found is to hurry up and run 'er back up north of the equator. This puts a negative pressure against the pet-cock and pulls every quart of oil in sight towards that brass bastwick.

Now, I've heard it rumored that the Mason-Dixon line will have the same effect on the oil filling requirements of the M. But this is only on the 1940 model. :>)

I thought this forum was full of knowledgable guys, evidently I was wrong! You don't need to change the oil in your tractors, trucks or anything else. This nonsense is a ruse perpetuated by Big Oil! All ya gotta do is check your oil from time to time and keep her topped off...

I thought you turned the tractor upside down and fill it through that big hole in the bottom of the oil pan. :>) These forums are for serious stuff and a place to have fun. If you cannot have fun in life, what is life for??? If I see something that is of no interest to me, I move on to the next one.

See? Now that is why I git on here. I just learned three different ways to refioll oil in the old M and one good reason why not to change at all and they all make sense to me. Kinda scary huh? Harley

It is easily solved. Paid membership subscriptions with I.D.'s and passwords. Any member deviating from tractor only topics would have membership revoked.

Very well stated and I agree. Tractor Talk use to be the forum that I read first but now is later or skipped as not worth the time.

Generally I just scan the original post subject lines and if not farm related go elsewhere.

Different interests for different folks I guess.

It will get worse. The new forum software pops new topics to the top, so the big off-topic messages will swamp & crowd out out the 2-reply tractor questions.

Never liked forums that pop new replies to the top because of that. Perhaps Kim can allow threads to remain in order of original posting...

I'm not sure about the specific software that Kim is trialing, but some of them allow you to choose weather you want old topics with new posts at the top, or to keep them in the order of the original posts. I have checked out her software, just not in that great of detail. I personally like to have them popped to the top, puts legitimate questions back in sight when it may take a couple of days for someone to come along with the answer.

In general though, forums seem to cycle. you'll have periods with on topic posts, then off topic posts, and slow periods too. Although I can do without the politics, I'd rather see that than a bunch of tumble weed rolling by.

Chuck

Not sure I have decided on the pop to the top thingy. But one advantage of the new software is that it would be easy for the administrator to block the abusers from posting. At least they would have to register as someone else, but if the same emails was used to block them as well, of course they could get a new hotmail account, but then no system is totally foolproof. :(

Well,OT gives us a beak from how to change oil or put air in a tire. I have an intrest in tractors and the various comments on how to get the skunk out of the cellar. I may even be able to give out advice or comments on how we did farm work.

And I am always interested in Allan in NE, musings.
