Hey Shocker, More than likley the idle is too fast. Clean air filter, check plugs, adjust carb (if gas) etc.

If this does not solve the problem, get a can of spray teflon lube, Liquid Wrench makes it - so does JD$$$. Spray the clutch with this stuff and work it to loosen it up. It may only be a short term fix, or not at all. As the JD tech said, clutch is not rebuildable.

You need a special tool to take this clutch off. It costs $50-75 and you will never use it again. So load up the Gator in the back of your pick up and drive to the dealer. The part is about $150 and they should not charge more than $10 to change it.

Don't do what I did unless you must. I thought it would be smart and take the engine out and down to the dealer to change the clutch. Save them having to disasemble, clean, repair and reasemble and charge me big money. Turns out the tool goes through the side of the frame and is changed on the spot. Guess I didn't see the knockout through the mud.

Anyway, I get it back together and all it does is overheat. Apparently you must bleed the air out of the coolant system, which the manual does not tell you how to do.

Drove it onto my pickup, back to the dealer and let them bleed it right. Runs great now and was much cleaner until my wife drove it through a ditch and burried it in the mud on the other side. Nothing hurt but her pride.

Hope it is only an idle adjustment for you, Grant

Re: JD Gator keeps moving at idle-Check idle speed in reply to shocker, 09-27-2004 21:16:20
The creeping issue may not be related to the clutch system at all. Check your engine idle speed. I have been a tech at a Deere dealership sice before the introduction of the Gator. I belive the idle speed is 1650 plus or minus 50 RPMs this applies to both the single and twin Kawasaki engines As the hours accumulate on the engine, the carbs can plug up and cause the engine to run leaner, which can cause the idle to fluctuate or be higher, or the screw can move due to vibration. If the idle speed is correct, it may be time to replace the drive clutch whic are not rebuildable, it may not be releasing all the way. Has the belt been removed and not reinstalled with the angle to the wright side of the clutch? Hope this helps.

I agree, drive clutch not opening all the way. Take the belt off and spray both clutches down heavily with WD40 or similar. Will clean the gunk (belt residue mostly) off, and get things working smoothly again. Don't put the belt back on until it is nice and dry....and probably should change the belt while you are at it. Hope that helps.

mine has almost always moved at idle with the grearbox in gear. if you have let it run for long periods of time, it may have worn a grove in the varisheave. or have you adjusted the gearbox to engine relationship recently to tighten the belt? either way, use neutral when you don't want gator to drive.
