Been looking at [and pricing] some 2000-to-2002 GM 1/2 tons. Some have 5.3 and some have 4.8 engines.Mainly will be a riding truck but might haul a little,or pull a small trailer. How much diffrence in the two engines? I've had older GM's with 305 and 350, is the diffrence about the diffrence in those?

I agree with other posters, not a whole lot of difference between the two, unless you are going to be pulling heavy loads frequently. There is also very little difference in mpg.

To me the 4.8 feels as strong as the early to mid 90s 350s, but I think a real factor should be the gear ratio. You could get away with a bit taller ratio with the 5.3 than you could with the 4.8.

Either way, ya gotta love the 283 V8 or the 327....I am pretty surprised that GM hasn't played that tune at all....many folks who like old iron remember the old Chevys with 283s and 327s.

The 4.8 makes nearly the 5.3 and even the 6.0 horsepower/torque but at higher rpms.

I have been driving an '03 GMC 1/2 ton ext. cab for a little over a year now.when shopping for truck I tried my best to get a 5.3L, but this truck showed up at a cheaper price with the 4.8L that I had to take a chance. I am NOT AT ALL disappointed in it's performance. Strong running/pulling truck, have approx 32,000 on it and very happy I didn't spend the extra $$$ on a 5.3L.

I have 01 4.8 liter extended cab. Power is quite good for ordinary truck functions. BUt if i were pulling heavy cattle trailers, RV, etc, i could see where you would need more engine.

When the 2000 year models came out my daughter and I ordered new Chevy X-Cabs. I ordered mine with the 5.3 @ 285 H.P.and my daughter ordered hers with the 4.8 @ 270 H.P.as it added no additional cost like the 5.3 did. There was 15-horse power difference at that time and I could never tell any difference when we pulled trailers. The new 04/year models are 4.8 @ 285 H.P. and the 5.3 @ 295 H.P. only 10-Horse power difference now. If you have more questions email me.

I have an '04 Sierra 1500 reg cab 4wd with 5.3 auto, 3.73 rears. I have no direct experience with the 4.8, but my 5.3 has all the nut I need to haul 7500 lbs of trailer, which is about all it is rated for and all I intend to pull. Mileage not towing on trips is 19+. Be aware earlier motors are rated a little less than the 03 & 04's. I am thrilled with my 5.3.
