My 1991 GMC 2500 4x4, automatic with overdrive has a tendancy to blow transmission fluid out when I pull a trailer. The truck is not overheating and the transmission does not seem to lose any fluid but after a hard pull there is ATF all over the under side of truck and front of trailer.Anyone have any idea where it is coming from and why?

I had the same problem years ago with my truck.Seems that there was a problem and that GM had a special dip stick with a locking cap.You should check this out. Charles

Hi Charles,

Yes, we retrofitted all the 4L60 & 4L80 dipsticks to the locking type. This was going on at the same time as the vent tube modification referred to in Tommy's post below.

Trouble was, these two modifications did nothing to get to the core problem of overheating. It just covered GM's backside somewhat against lawsuits resulting from the hot oil fires.

In the 1991 model year, GM finally somewhat bullet-proofed that tranny against failure by redesigning & spring-loading the 2/4 clutch release.

Towing still gave the transmission fits, but if the owner installed the optional GM external cooler and stayed out of overdrive, chances of the transmission's survival increased quite a bit.

Jack,

There was TSB (technical service bulletin) out on this problem from GM sveral years ago that concerned some modification to the vent I think. Ask your dealer about it.

Tommy,

The TSB you refer to installed the rubber "dump" hose on the older models ('88 thru '90 as I recall).

8" of rubber hose with a tie strap. They were trying to get that hot oil to dump away from the exhaust pipe to lessen the event of fire.

Another thing that will trigger this problem is running over size tires. larger tires will make the engine run lower rpms at cruising speeds causing reduced flow through the transmission cooler making it overheat.

I sure hope your tansmisson is not damaged too bad.It is overheating the fluid due to the load it is pulling.when this happens the fluid becomes very thin due to the heat.It then is forced out through the case vent near the top of the housing.Make sure you are not overfilling it with fluid as this also will cause it dispose of fluid through the vent.If the truck does not have a transmisson cooler on it you need to have one put on it if you continue to pull a trailer.Install it and have the fluid and filter changed. Also be sure and select the drive position when towing your trailer. If you tow the trailer in the o/d position it will fry the overdrive clutchpack.Goodluck.

Thanks for the tips. I may just have to round up some cash to give to my local transmission shop and have it checked out before I end up along the road someplace.

Jack,

Do you have the 4L60 (square pan) or the heavy 4L80?

Are you absolutely sure it isn't getting hot?

That blowing of the oil out during towing is usually a precursor of a great big failure coming on; also, the heat will cause a converter to turn blue on that model.

The only other thing that can cause this is a plugged vent. Wayyyyy , way up on top of the case just above the pump. It should have a “dump” hose attached to it and dropping down on the passenger side on a ’91 model.
