Huw: I owned a "64 Super Major with a loader and (Ford) backhoe, and was very happy with it. Some things were clunky, like the power steering and the starting setup, but overall I did a lot of work with it around my place and sold it for exactly what I originally paid for it. It required nothing other than routine maintenance and a couple of minor odds and ends while I owned it, which is certainly better than a lot of 40-year-old tractors I"ve been involved with. Parts are available if you know where to look, though they"re not cheap.

Huw: I have actually operated some of these Fordson major diesels. A lot of them came to Canada. They had a good reputation for being tough and reliable. They were however considered cumbersom and clumsy compared the North American row crops.

Back when these were new the price was right for good old diesel pulling horse power. Most of the majors to come here were equiped much like our big standards, thus the reason for that clumsy reputation. Correct if I am wrong, but I believe those majors were also available in row crop configuration as well. Not narrow front, but high clearence front axles and 38" rear tires. Parctically none of those ever came here.

Just bought a European built (Belgium I think seller said) '79 Ford 4600 row crop (52 pto). Fronts are 18 x 7.50 and rears are 13.6 x 38. I like the high ground clearance to get over windrows when haying.

It has all the amenities except has an open station (cockpit..which I prefer) with a ROPS and OEM canopy attached. Has what seems to be 6000 orig hours and owner took care of it. I'm tickled. Only had to drive 250 miles to get it. My 3rd web purchased tractor.

My dad bought one a few years ago. He bought it from a construction company, so it had a backhoe and loader on it. It'd be a pretty good plowing tractor if he'd get rid of the backhoe and loader and put it back to the way they came. Good running tractor other than a bad battery and brakes. Good on fuel too.

The few that were around here were pretty well respected as I have heard. Age and parts availability here has rendered them obsolete to all but the most loyal owners.
