4020 lift arm

I just bought a "71 JD 4020 in very good shape with one exception. The little knob that you pull up on the lift arm to allow for the hitch to slide out is frozen solid. Using PB Blaster to loosen the thing and then using short pry bar to try to get it up, of course the little knob broke off. I took of the little cover plate with the spring inside and continued drenching with PB Blaster. Just out of curiosity I called the local JD dealer to see about a replacement arm and it is listed as an obsolete item. I can get along without this feature but sure don't want to if I don't have to. Can anybody give me an idea how to unstick the extension release or if I need to get a replacement if I decide to?

Mine was frozen up a few years also and I eventually got it free with a lot of WD40 and persistance but it might not have been as bad as yours. As for a replacement I can"t imagine the part being discontinued. I looked in the catalog at www.jdparts.com and found the part and it was listed for $59.00 (Just the locking mechanism not the lift arm) For the late model 4020"s it was part number AR69317 but in the comment section it said it was replaced by part number AR90082 which is the one used on the early model 4020"s. I"d call the dealership back up and ask them if they had or could get part number AR90082.

If that doesn"t work or is too much then you could try a salvage yard. I have bought several parts from Neslon Parts in NY. I"ve only bought a few things from him but his prices seemed to be pretty good. He advertises in Lancaster Farming and his number is 1-800-730-4020. I have no connection to him other than purchased a few parts.

BTW. www.jdparts.com is a great site, all you have to do is register and then you can log on and see the parts catalog and get prices.

With the cover off, you can see there's quite an area for rusting. The latch part is about 1-3/4" diameter. Its a pretty good fit in its hole.

I had mine ('68 4020) apart this spring. I'd rested the top link over to the side and when I lifted the three point the end of the top link rested on that knob and bend the shaft 90 degrees. I found that the knob, the shaft, and the latch are pressed together, no fasteners. Your knob can probably be pushed back on. If its loose a drop of Loctite will hold it as strongly as if it was a push fit. I spent a while with the hydraulic press straightening the shaft and pushed it out of the latch. I never did get it really straight, so I came home to the shop, picked out a piece of steel the same diameter and milled a flat. You could get there with a grinder or file too. I had to braze up the hole on the plate because it was stretched after I bent the plate back in shape. I pressed the new parts together and its working fine. Don't forget the spring.

Might there be a drain hole underneath that you could poke a punch up to loosen the latch? It might take a bit of heat and some Kroil but it ought to come out.

The lower link is available from salvage yards and after market. Even maybe from YT. More likely from that place in Indianola. Upper links show up on epay regularly.
