Hey guys,
I'm having a problem with a injection pump that should be warrantied that GM is giving me problems with. There is a little trash in the fuel tank and signs of a little water. They have put 2 pumps on it in less than 6 weeks, another dealer told me he put on 5 in one week before he got a good one. I have been told by other GM techs and mechanics that what the dealership is tellin me is a bunch of bull and I have to agree. Its been at the dealer for 5 weeks this coming monday. On another note, I was not there when the tank was pulled so as far as I know they poured the crap in there themselves. I just don't trust other people working on my stuff anymore. I have been told that the pumps they are getting are coming out of Mexico? Chances are that they are being built by someone who only sees the business end of a mule.

My guess is that those bad pumps were actually good ones! Probably something else wrong that controls the IP that is causing the supposed failures. Go to this site and click on the forums link at top, post the symptoms or do a search, helpful people there!

What is an IP? You mean ECM?

Thanks,

Allan

IP is the Injection Pump. Most likely the culprit is the PMD (pump mounted driver) or the lift pump assuming it is a '95 or later.

i have a "95 with 190,000 miles and i just got done putting the first pump in it. i took it to gm to have diagnosed for $70 and then pulled it home and put it in myself. pulled the old one and sent it to a local diesel shop and they rebuilt it for $800. they had it done the same day and i bought the gaskets at gm for $30 put the pump back in and took it back to gm to time it, another $100. it took about 2hrs. to pull and 2 1/2hrs. back in. over all cost $1000 and two nights of my time, not bad considering gm wanted $2500 and a week to do the job!

Gary,

Those fly-by-wire pumps are a total nightmare!

If they are anything like they used to be, half of the problem lies in the tech's reprogramming the thing and half in his lucking out and getting a decent pump. I've seen 'em come 3 bad ones in a row (been that way since '94), so dunno what your guys are fightin'.

I don't miss that part of GM at all! Come to think of it, I don't miss any part of GM! :>)

What's the fight? Are they tryin' to tell you that you are providing the water/trash in the tank?

Allan

Well, they put a pump on under warranty, it lasted about 4 weeks, they took it, kept it about a week, put on another pump, it lasted less than a week, now they have hade the thing for 4 weeks as of 9/20/04 and trying to blame contaminated fuel as the problem.
That is why there is water separators and filters on the things in the first place and like I said, or at least I think it did, I was not there when the tank was pulled so I dont' kown if they put anything in the tank or not??
The other techs I've talked to told me no way would that amount of water cause the pump to fail in any event. I have a locking cap on the fuel tank by the way. Its just a plain and simple dealership/company screwing the little guy.
Another note too. I bought this truck to use in my custom hay baling business as it had a hyd. bale bed on it and also I have know the truck since it was bought new. I had another dealer tell me he put 5 inj. pumps on in one week before he finally got a good one. I don't want anymore part of a diesel truck thats for sure. I like GM but this has really tainted my image of them big time. Out of the past 7 weeks I have had it less than one. Looks like I should get a little compensation for loss of use and wages for them dragging their feet.

I have a "fly by wire" 6.5 turbodiesel that had 50-some thousand miles on it when I got it, and the pump HAD BEEN replaced with an updated unit.

I have put 125,000 miles on the pickup since I've had it, without ANY pump trouble, so they're not all bad!

Have they checked the electric lift pump in the frame rail for proper operation, flow and pressure? Those pumps are known to fail, or have intermittant problems, or the oil pressure switch that turns them on can quit, or get intermittant, also. Problems here will cause all sorts of problems that get blamed on the injection pump.

A bad crankshaft postion sensor in the front engine cover, or even a worn timing chain, or bad crankshaft vibration dampner can cause the computer controlled pump to do all sorts of weird things.

In my area, generally the GM dealers apparently don't mess with the diesel fuel system, but rather, "farm it out" to the authorized Stanadyne shops. (They send the whole vehicle over there).

Maybe you could get this thing settled, even if you had to pay for the visit yourself, by going to an authorized Stanadyne dealer. Yes, these things have caused some problems, but I suspect someone is overlooking something on your truck.

They did put a crankshaft sensor on it before they realised the pump was out.
you mentioned the lift pump on the frame rail? Are you speaking of the fuel pump in the tank? I am considering just having everything put back together on the truck and bringing it home and doing it myself. I have a cousin that is a GM tech and can probably get help in putting it in.
I would like to keep the truck but this sure has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Gary,

What year is your pickup? From about 1988 until at least '96 or '97, the electric lift pump was in the LH frame rail, more or less under the driver. I'm not sure if they moved it to the tank AFTER that.

Have you been to: www.thedieselpage.com ?

There's a wealth of GM diesel info there, some free and some members only information. I've found it well worth the cost of a membership.
