I"m looking to buy a ZTR mower for my 2.5 acre lot. I"m not looking for anything other than mowing. I want something of good quality, but not something that"s too pricy. Any suggestions?

I have a grasshopper 721d 1996 model. The left hydro has a leak; it looks like it's at the top of the hydro where the hydraulic line connects. Should I replace the fitting and the hydraulic line?

Thanks in advance for your help.

About the best Z I have found for speed, quality of cut and top notch quality is a Dixie Chopper. The most poplular for what you are mowing is an LT2000-50D, the sell for $6299.00.
The next on would be a ZT2148 Gravely, $4599.00. Cheaper price, but not the quality of a Dixie Chopper. The Gravely does have a 10ga welded, fabricated deck, with sealed spindle bearings, not stamped steel, but they use hydrostat transaxle, not individual pumps and wheel motors.
ZTR's are like everything else, you cannot get real good quality, cheap. You can get decent quality for a reasonable price. But you want to find something with at least a 10ga or heavier fabricated deck. Stamped steel decks will not hold up to the 18,000FPM plus blade tip speed. They will eventually crack, plus the stamp decks will bend if you hit something and at 7-10 MPH ground speed, it will hit hard.

I just bought a Toro Z master 23HP Kohler 60" cut this summer. I have about the same amount of grass. I looked at all of them too and decided on the Toro. One thing I liked about the Toro over the others is that each wheel has its own seperate drive motor and pump. Kubota is all built together. So if something happens to the drive unit...$$$$. Just something to think about.
Dealer support means a lot too. Buy something you can get parts for later. Toro is big in our area. Overall, a ZTR is a huge time saver and fun to operate. I plan on maintaining it and keeping it for 30 years.

My kubota has a motor for each wheel connected by hyd lines to seperate hydostatic valves. Either can be relpaced,IF, if ever needed

Nat, it appeared that the pump and drive system was all built into one unit on the one I looked at. The literature is at home. Either way, Kubota is one of the best out there quality wise. You are right about IF it ever needs replacing.

Mitch if you want a mower that will last a life time find a dixie chopper. Local landscaper has 3 of them and he is a dealer just to show off he mows the football field in 8 minutes with one.

I have a Gravley PM 152Z, 52" cut with a 23hp Kawasaki. I cut about 11 acres a week with this machine and have had no major problems. You do not need one quit this big but Gravley makes an excellent mower...

My wife bought a TORO Z Master, 17hp Kawasaki and a 44" cut. It will mow as fast as you can stay in the seat. Don't be fooled by the Lowes/Menards/Farm Store cheapies, they may only cost $3000, but if you are mowing 2.5 acres you will trash one in a couple of seasons. We mow about 5 acres with the Toro and a Grasshopper. BTW, the Toro was about $4000 less than a comparable Grasshopper, damn they are proud of the brown paint.

The main drawbacks to your Toro is:
1. The have a 14ga stamped steel deck compared to Dixie Chopper, Grasshopper, Ariens, Gravely. They will eventually stress crack from extended use.
2. They use tapered roller bearings in the deck. If you grease them too much you will push the bottom oil seal out and then it will not hold grease. If you do not put enough in it, the top bearing will go out from lack of lubrication.
We have had 2 units in out shop that had 19hp Kaw and 44" deck with bearings and pullies destroyed with less than 250 hours on them.
So yes, they are $3000.00 cheaper than a Greasshopper, or others, but they also are not as heavy built machine.

I have a Toro ZTR and I don`t think that there is a better machine on the market. 16 hp 44" cut. It saves a lot of time on my lawn mowing jobs.

I went thru the same thing this spring, I looked at JD, great dane, yazoo, walker, cub cadet z force and tank, toro, bobcat, and kubota. I decided on the kubota, I think it's the best, but the main reason was because the dealer told me the truth, not what he thought I wanted to hear. Other reasons are hydrolic clutch, heavier drive moters, hydrolic lift, bigger tires. So far I'm impressed. One thing to take into conderation is a zero turn will beat you to death, compared to a mid mount mower, That means more than I thought it would

Going to have to agree. I work for a park system where we mow very rough ground a couple times a week. We run all Kubotas. They are pushing 800 hours on them and we have had very little problems and we beat the heck out of them. The problems we do have is due to lack of grease but thats our fault. My Dad bought one last September for our place. Sure cut the mowing time down a lot.
