Hello,
I'm looking to buy a tractor for a block of land I've just bought, 50acres. It'll need to be reasonably cheap, hence older model, Diesel, and will be used to mow, cultivate and spray between vineyard rows so not too big , probably 35 - 55 Hp?... was thinking Massey Ferguson 35X, Ford 3000D... but there are a couple of David Brown 990's nearby and some Fiats... of which I know nothing about.

Any advice out there?

i have a ferguson TEF 20 (diesel) and a david brown 950 also a diesel. They are both very good tractors with good power to weight ratio. Having mentioned that you require a tractor to be used in vineyars i suggest you look at the ferguson in more detial as the david brown is a much larger tractor and the spare parts are very expensive were as the ferguson parts are easily avalible and often very reasonable.

I'd research tractor dealers in your area and get one they work on and sell parts for so if it ever needs repairs or parts, you will have a place to go. Now if you were collecting or restoring a tractor not for work, thats another story. You can afford to wait for a mail order part.

Cheers guys... I think I"m on the right track... the purchase will be technically as a working tool for the vineyard, but given I"ll have time on my side , and other vehicles available, it is also to satisfy me need to tinker with old oily metal.... I can get away with playing with tractors but racing cars are now a past memory.. :) (ie: I"m getting married soon.. )

MF 135 or Ford 300/3600 looks like the go.

Is there any information on this site or any other sites reagrding buying information, what to look out for etc for these two models?

Thanks again

All the tractors you mentioned above are decent. the 35 to 55 Hp range sounds about right for what you want to do, probably the low end of that range unless you plan to do lots of brush hogging. The old David Browns are tough but might be hard to get parts for. The best tractor in the 35-40 HP class is the Massey 135, best 50 HP tractor is the Massey 165, These Massies are hard to find, tho as no one seems to want to give them up. The best 65HP class tractor is the Ford 5000, and anything bigger the best is Deere. But you can find a good machine in any brand. Depends on local dealerships for parts and service and the particular tractor you are looking at, what kind of shape it is in. Good luck.
