Hi

Not sure if this is the right forum but I could use some help. I do not know tractors as this is my first. I think it is about a 1988 version. It has a loader and a brush mower on it. It has two hydraulic controls for rear attachments, and something called a draft control. When I purchased it I drove it and thought I went through all the gears. I really do not remember as it was last May. Due to circumstance I have only used it a few times to mow. I used the reverse, and low forward. I also have used the 1-2-3-4 "H". It seems to have two positions for low forward, at least that is how it feels. At first I was not sure I was pushing far enough forward but it seems that there are actually two forward low positions. I do sense much of a speed difference.

First question - am I just not fully engaged on the gear or are there two forward low positions?

In addition there is a "H" postion on the reverse - low forward lever that implies moving the lever to the right and forward gets me to a high set. I cannot get it in that position.

Second question - is there a "H" position and how do I get in it ie is there some trick?

I like the tractor, it is probably a bit big.

Thanks in advance for any advice or instruction.

Bob

I have a 685.
The outboard shift lever has only 3 positions. To the left and back is reverse.
To the left and forward is lo forward.
To the right and forward is hi forward.
The inboard shift lever is an H, 1-2-3-4.

It is not my favourite, kinda like shifting gears with a wet noodle.

If this 685 transmission is the same as my 885 there is a 4 speed transmission lever and a high, low, reverse range lever. There is only one position in each of the ranges. Thus you have 8 forward speeds and 4 reverse speeds unless your tractor is equipped with a torque amplifier as mine is. This is controlled by an electric switch on the dash. Up and the TA is off, down and the TA is on. With the TA on the tractor will move slower in the same gear.

The best thing to do is get the manual for this tractor from a Case IH dealer.
