Farmer had a nice Oliver 1650G for sale. Priced it at $3,500. The "early bird gets the worm" dealer bought it and turned it around for $6,500. I'm not ragging on the dealer but just suggesting if you have something to sell it pays to learn what it's worth before you price it.

Uhhh, the guy who paid $6500 is the one who didn't do his homework here, not the one who sold it for $3500. Shoot, we only paid $6400 for a real nice Case 2390 and it is at least 3 times the tractor that Oliver is.

$3,500.00 for a 1650 Oliver? About what I saw one going for around here a month or so ago. I should've went and looked at it, but like a dummy, didn't. Instead I picked up 950 Deere for $6,000. I guess it's nice. Came with a loader, bush hog, back blade, and tire chains for those big AG tires that spin easy. Try pulling a stump with those things (tires). Never get used to having to cut the fronts far right to raise the loader or auger. But I guess it's nice. Gonna sell it after winter, and piece together something bigger for much less, like that Oliver.

Don't follow me into combat fellers, you'd be in trouble.

What did this dealer have to do to put in saleable condition that he wants $6500.00 for it. He may also have that price on it fishin. He may take a lot less if you put cash in front of him.

He actually sold it for $6,500 which is the going price up here for a clean 1650G. He did nothing to it except trailer it to his lot.

Yep,

Dealers are not in business for the fun of it; he spotted an easy dollar and took advantage of the situation.

Still wish they'd dicker a little easier when it comes to me, tho. :>)

Several ways to look at that situation. Maybe the seller knew what he wanted or needed to get out of it. Maybe he wanted a quick sale. maybe he knew of something wrong with the tractor. maybe..... The second "seller" is in a better position, as a dealer, to sell it for "full value". I buy a good many pieces of equipment throughout the year. Some of them, I pay a premium for, and price them at "top dollar". In those cases, I have something that is worth a good price. I'll hold on to it untill that one person that "just can't live without it" comes along. You MIGHT find the same thing cheaper, but you won't be getting something any BETTER. But yeah, it does pay to do your homework before pricing something. I work too hard for my money to "give it away". I'm guessing you do too. John

I with you on this. Deals I look for are where I can buy it for x, put x in it, and sell it for 3x (give a thousand, put no more than a thousand in it, and sell it for 3) or a straight buy for x and sell for 2x. Just picked up a 460 IH, hoping it will work out that way. Wrong color for me but the price was right.

I agree with you IDF. Unless you know the whole story, it doesn't matter. I'm on the other end of the spectrum here, and tractors sold here, (unless old enough that its not feasable), have the fluids and filters changed, and repairs made as needed. Local tractors are not bought so we do not compete with our customers. You buy from that farmer, its a YOU OWN IT/AS IS deal. When they buy it here, the satifaction of knowing theywill have a little help if something goes wrong.
