I have had a gm alternator on a tractor for years, using a switch to excite regulator. tried to hook up a light bulb in line to eliminate switch, but it does not work, bulb stays on,alternator does not charge.do I have the wrong size bulb? do not know what size it is, its in a small holder about the size of a dime and would go in to a dash board with an amber lens over it.. any suggestions?

I put a truck side marker light on,, still does not excite the regulator, light stays lit, put two bulbs, in parallel and series , does not excite regulator.if I use the toggle switch to momentarily excite it , it does charge, I am beginning to think this light bulb deal will not work.

I use a side marker lamp from a 73-79 ford pickup.

Rab I think has it correct. What I did once was install the too small idiot light in dash and another slightly larger bulb in parallel behind the dash to excite the alt. You won't need the additional bulb if you can get a big enough bulb in the idiot light holder.

Obviously it"s not a big enough bulb, wattage-wise. Not enough current to excite the regulator initially. You were using a very low resistance previously - a plain wire.

I use an inline diode to run current directly from my ignition switch to the regulator. A diode works like a one way check valve for electricity. it lets power go through it to the regulator, but won't let it back feed when you try to shut it off.
