I have a 1953 Farmall Super C tractor and am having problems with the #3 & 4 cylinders. It has a distributor for ignition and the compression appears to be okay, but the #3 & 4 cylinders plugs keep getting covered with black soot and fouling. The #1 & 2 plugs burn fine. I have replaced the intake gasket, cap, rotor and plug wires without any success.

Does anyone have any ideas on why this happens?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a little oil getting past the rings or through the valve guides. While new sleeves and pistons would be great, you might get by with hoaning the cylinders, installing new rings and having the head overhauled at a machine shop.

"Appears to be OK" - My advice is measure it and then you can say it IS alright or you may have found your problem.
Are all the plugs the same heat grade?
Is this just fuel fouling? - light, fluffy deposits or is it caused by oil burning?

I have checked my compression and all 4 cylinders are the same, but someone told me that I could have blown head gasket between #3 & 4. The fouling is light and fluffy, but only on #3 & 4. #1 & 2 are plugs light tan.

Thanks.
