Hi, I just recently purchased an 8N at an auction a couple of days ago and didn't realize until today that there is a grinding noise coming from [what seems like] the front of the transmission housing. It grinds consistently in and out of gear, but quits when the clutch is depressed.

I ran a search in this forum and it sounds like this would be the input shaft bearing. I'm curious as to how expensive a repair like this would be, and if it would be fairly simple for me to fix myself. I don't have very much experience at all with tractor repair, but I love to disassemble and reassemble things, and I have a good deal of spare time on my hands as well as a shop to work on the tractor in.

Thanks in adv.

Tim

It is a ford! You don't even need a manual. Block up the center and take the bolts out. It was pretty simple for 'ol Henry to build. It will only go back together one way. Sounds like an input brg to me. Take an oil sample from center housing and look for sparklies. Run a magnet on a stick arround in the oil.A bad brg should leave a tell tail sign.

Okay,

It will probably cost me a doughnut, 'cause I've never eyeballed the inside of a Ford, but wouldn't a bad throw out bearing make more noise when the clutch is pushed in, instead of the other way around?

Old inquiring minds wanna know,

Allan

As long as you got a place and a set of tools, all you need is the service manual. You already have the right attitude!
